Becks left out of England Squad

David Beckham has been left out of the England squad, Steve McClaren named for the friendly against Greece. It was new England Manager, Steve McClaren's, first squad selection and despite his protests to the contrary, I believe he was trying to make a statement, making sure he slipped phrases such as "new beginning" and "clean slate" in, between empty cliches, about "new directions" and a little love letter to England fans, saying how we are the best fans in the world. Although he praised Beckham, he spoke as if David Beckham would really have his work cut out to be re-included and made it clear that he had a plan and Beckham wasn't included in it. He could have said, I'm testing new options, but David Beckham will remain a part of our thinking and he may have more to contribute, but he didn't. He didn't soften his words or hedge his bets at all. He made it sound like he was basically saying, "never say never" to any chance of re-inclusion, but little more. To be honest I'm gutted, really gutted. However, if anyone can play themselves beck in to contention and make a case for inclusion in the face of adversity, it's David Beckham. The man is a force of nature, very stubborn and very determined!

Becks has put out a statement to say that he understands. But I don't understand. I really don't. I look at some of the players included in the squad and I can't see how the decision could have been made for footballing reasons alone. No. Could it be a decision motivated by public opinion and press as much as anything else? It shouldn't be but I believe it is. Beckham has enough class and dignity to make, as always, a positive statement in support of England. He could remain silent, he could say no comment, but he chooses to re-state how much he loves his country, wants to play for his country and hopes too again, as fans, I know we all hope he will too! Thank you for everything you have done for England Becks, you're still the best!

i watched mcClaren's interview last night and i was more than disgusted. i'm very sure he didn't mean to include beckham from the beginning of his so called "career". why beckham has always been the "scapegoat" everytime england loses to a better team? he did more than enough to help England in WC 06. He had two assists and one marvellous goal that HELPED England through to next round. why noone even bother ask about the performance of the "other" midfielders? i want to see how far mcClaren can go with his new team.. can't wait to see that blah!

I agree with the above post. How can you leave out Beckham when he performed better than Lumpard! Also if it's all about the future, then god save us, if Phil Neville is a part of the future and David Beckham isn't. FFS. Becks was sacrificed as a way for Mac to separate himself from Sven's reign and Becks is being punished for the fact he was seen as SGE's right hand man. Truth is Mac was part of the SGE set up and he was on the side line with his pen and paper and never came up with shit. Truth is Becks is still a good player and that has nowt to do with how well he got on with old SGE.

I agree with you all - the thing worrying me, is when McClaren became Manager, the first thing he did was head to Old Trafford. Do you know any other managers who decided Beckham shouldn't play because he was too famous and bigger than the team? Can you think of one? I can and what have Manchester United won since? Which makes you wonder, now that we have Mac what will England win - probably about the same amount as the other manager who dispensed with Beckham for reasons of celebrity and because of the media circus rather than of form or skill. Poor Becks I really feel for him, he doesn't deserve to be treated this way.
