Jonathan Woodgate has paid tribute to David Beckham and backed Becks to return to the England side. Former England Manager Hoddle has also suggested that he thinks Beckham could come back, but he seems to think a recall is much more likely if England struggle to qualify for Euro 2008 and as we all know they have a pretty easy group. Phil Neville, also commented that he was sure Becks would continue to fight for a place.

I am sure that Becks will give his all for Real Madrid, whether this will be enough for him to be recalled is unknown as he was not dropped due to form, he was one of the better players at the world cup, earning the Man of the Match trophy against Trinidad & Tobago, scoring a goal and assisting two others. Although much is made of his pace, I think Becks suffered from the tactics employed as much as anyone, after all England was almost devoid of strikers capable of a clinical finish and Beckham is an assist machine, one up front is not an ideal formation for David beckham in my opinion.

A number of factors will need to change for Becks to be included in the England squad, it’s not fair and Becks has earnt better but life isn’t fair and we will have to wait and see. In the meantime nothing would please me more than if the English press would simply leave David Beckham alone but they seem to be obssessed with him, devoid of the skills and imagination required to think of something else to fill the column inches with. They are of course devoid of the class and the decency it would take to show a great sporting icon, who has served his country well, the respect he deserves.

The one thing the media does do for David Beckham, though quite by accident, is that they emphasise the dignity and style with which Becks conducts himself especially when contrasted with their own behaviour which is always tainted by an under-current of pettiness, jealousy and vindictiveness.
