David Beckham to play friendly
David Beckham has been named in the squad to play the Jesus Gil Memorial Trophy II. The benefit match will be held at Atlético Madrid’s Vicente Calderón stadium at 9pm Dec 22. It is in honor of Atletico's late president. The Times and others british papers have suggested David Beckham's inclusion is a punishment and whilst some first team regulars have not been named in the squad, they fail to point out that players such as Casillas, Cannavaro, Raul, Guti etc have, so Becks has not been singled out and he is not the only foreign national included. The Times Story here. There is also coverage in The Sun and The Telegraph. I suspect the press are making more of this than is necessary, perhaps it was a slow news day? Here's wishing Becks and the rest of the squad an enjoyable match, perhaps it will give them a chance to go into the Christmas holidays on an improved note as their last game was a sad occasion.
If, like me, you are sick of the negative press and their endless speculation and exaggeration, and want to read something upbeat, there is a nice article online in which Ryan Giggs reminisces about the treble winning youth team of 1992 which of course included Becks!

look how biased the press is:
Becks steped down as Captain - he didn't loose the captaincy....
(if he was forced to do so - we'll well never know I guess)
that behaviour by RM - @ssholes they are. After all what he has given them on the pitch and (specially in terms of financial gain and coverage for the club)
It's a lovely Article the -classic one - makes a good read and brings back all nice memmories.
on a Fantastic Year 2007 - for our Number SEVEN.

What @ssholes behaviour you are talking about? The fact RM call Beckham with Guti, Raul, Reyes, Salgado, Cannavaro, Helguera, Mejia and Casillas etc up to play tonight? I do not think it is so bad? There is a benefit and how do you know they do not want to play? Maybe Becks is ok with to play? I am wishing David, Victoria, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz Christmas blessings - M

Hiya Ben,
I saw the article that said Becks "lost" the captaincy but I didn't link to it, I always try to leave the worst of the press bias and factually incorrect stories off the site, unless they include news not covered elsewhere that said I probably shouldn't have included The Sun - they always sensationalise everything. Their headlines are ridiculous lol
I really hope 2007 will be a much better year for Becks too!
M - you have a point, I hadn't actually considered it but you know it's possible Becks even asked to play, he often asks to do extra in training and if he felt that Weds game was disappointing, he might have wanted to play... who knows? Maybe there will be a statement from one of his staff. I certainly hope that RM have not made him change his plans and play but if they have, the fact that some of the other regulars and Cannavaro have also been called does at least mean it is not only Becks being singled out.

Someone on BMFF said that the Brazilian players flew back to Brazil for a charity match there. In fact, near all Eurpoean players were called up for the match. The press just made an issue out of nothing..............

Thanks! I didn't know that about the Brazil boys. I thought the media was making more from this as lets face it they always do! but I didn't realise the full extent of their exaggerating... as Becks seems not to have even been in the squad... so yes they've outdone themselves this time!!
