Real Madrid 2 - 1 Athletic Bilbao

david beckham new Adidas bootsReal Madrid are now only 1 point away from La Liga leaders Barcelona! David Beckham was bought on as a substitute at half-time and as hoped not only got some decent playing time but also had a great game in the centre of midfield, perhaps we will see him used there more, as his passing was instrumental in improving Real Madrid's attack. Real Madrid certainly picked up the intensity after the break and had a much better second half. Becks was wearing his new Adidas "swerve" white, silver and gold boots today and perhaps they are going to bring him better fortune than his blue ones did! Becks is not superstitious but I am :-)

Becks post match comments can be read here. It is interesting to see that he is denying a possible move Stateside so perhaps that isn't on the cards? Whatever decision he makes, I only hope it will be the right one for him and that he will get sufficient playing time to be happy.

I am just thrilled to see Becks getting some overdue praise and positive vibes, I really hope it will buoy him up and be the beginning of a better time for him.

The official match report and photos are online at RealMadrid.com and the first of the photos are in the gallery, hopefully more of the agencies will have photos tomorrow -- Anna

Becks in "Command Centre" :-)

Nice to see him play in CM and get praise that is well deserved.

It's a long time since he has played there with a good DM besides him (now Diarra, formerly Roy Keane/Nicky Butt)

It reminds me of his very very early ManUtd days (nostalgic thoughts)

Still I hope he quits the club though.

+ gone are the ugly blue boots(appart the cool lions) and come have the new "swerve" ones - which are white/gold and definetly look better

I'm really glad to see Beckham back in action and being given some decent playing time at last! He definitely deserved the praises he got from the press with his performance (he was just back from an injury which sidelined him for 3 weeks, and that he seldom got sufficient playing time in the last 3 months)!

However, I read from the press that Capello claimed that he had to sub Beckham in at the beginning of the 2nd half just because Emerson was injured and could not carry on!!! Well, it's quite clear that in Capello's mind, Beckham is no more than a reserve player who can only come on when others are not available!!! I really do not see any improvement in Beckham's situation :(

Great to see Becks in action again but he really needs full games and some continuity.... and I wish the press would stop mentioning the contract renewal blah....he just wants to get on with his football and the rest will come later.
Greetings

Ben,

I am really pleased about the new boots, seriously lol a couple of weeks ago I was actually going to write "lose the boots" because absolutely nothing but bad things have happened to him since he got those damn blue boots lol I think they were jinxed so maybe he will have better luck now :)

Anonymous,

I also saw in one of the articles that Capello said about the injuries and so it's true Becks might not have got so much game time if it were not for that but at least he did and as you said he played incredibly well especially considering how little match time he has had in recent months as rojo said he really needs some full games and to play regularly. There was mention in one of the articles (it might have been The Times, that Capello praised Becks but when you read his comment it wasn't exactly "praise" it was a very reserved comment, he just said the position was not new to Becks. I still don't really trust Capello, he seems to have such loyalty to the players he bought in over the Summer especially those form his former club and also players he has worked with in the past like Raul and Becks who does not enjoy the privelege of having any such favored history plays very well but is not justly rewarded for that play. Still I expect he will get more game time in Kiev he may well start. However, as that match does not matter, we can't read to much in to it, we will know more about the situation next weekend.

I think it is a true indication of the measure of the man, that with everything going on and the story in Don Balon and the outstanding contract and the media going on and on, that he can still go out there and play so well! He rocks :)

Hi ya Ben,

The Don Balon story was the one where the "un-named member of the board of directors" supposedly said that the club wants Becks to leave and included quotes from del bosque etc the details are here
