What goes around...

David Beckham is a gentleman who rises above the many unfounded and undeserved attacks launched against him by the jealous, over-ambitious, under-achievers of the world. However, I am not so kind, so I was absolutely delighted today to read that Terry Butcher, who criticized Becks at every opportunity during the 2006 World Cup, singling him out for blame when he was in fact one of England's best players and calling for him to be dropped, has been sacked! He is, or rather was, the Manager for Sydney Football Club and although he had a year left on his contract the BBC reports that he's been give the old heave-ho. It seems Terry wasn't terribly successful, which begs the question just how qualified to give an opinion as a pundit was he? His own calls on selection and tactics have been a failure. Source.

Steve McClaren managed to cash in a few more karmic points when England lost to Spain. Obviously, I feel sorry for both fans and players but hope it will be some consolation that this defeat might hurry McClaren's exit and in turn his replacement with someone who will select the squad based on form not on the desire to appease the media or make a statement.

Even the most biased Beckham critic watching tonight's game and seeeing McClaren clutching at straws would have to admit that David Beckham, at the very least as an option on the bench, would have been a very welcome "straw" indeed. It's a sad situation when David Beckham would give anything to play for his national team, and the fans of that national team have called for his inclusion in the squad, but McClaren's pride and need to save face prevents what is best for the team, for the player, and for the fans from happening. If this loss brings England one step closer to getting the Manager they need and deserve then the short term pain is worth it for the long-term gain. Match Report

That was a rubbish game. McClaren panicked once Spain scored and had no answers or a clue at to what tactics to use or even really who should be in what position. It was funny, to see that all we did was play the long ball but before when England played the long ball every one blamed Beckham for it, but it was the team plan he was following and trouble is he was better at it cos he can drop the ball on a dime, all the folks that were yelling drop becks are now yelling for someone else to be dropped they don't seem to get it that droppigng a single player here or there ain't gonna fix nowt, you've gotta have a plan that everyone knows and can play and then play it. To do that you need a good boss, if we don't get rid now we won't have to worry about Euro 2008 :(

Perfect summary. Never could understand the contradiction, especially as most English club teams employ similar tactics.
It's really hard for me to watch England games now because I am so apalled by McClaren, Beckham's treatment only a symptom of his weaknesses. But since the squad aren't responsible for hiring him, I have to keep up with how the boys are doing. Under McClaren, I agree, they won't be doing well. Another painful match.
By the way, who wouldn't have called up someone, who has played with or against so many on the opposing team, for the benefit of their experience alone. OH, I forgot experience is no longer a virtue...

many notable sports journalists wrote that Mclaren should have kept Beckham so that the younger players can be eased into their positions and he can help with his experience. I mean it would not hurt for the younger players to follow Beckham's work ethic. Owen Hargreaves is one of the upcoming players who admire him.

Beckham was THE BEST player not one of the best players in England squad during world cup. From my point of view, he scored 2 goals, the 1 was given as own goal, I think it was not and most of the other goals were created bu him.Football is a team game, no one should be blamed alone....... But all the media and most of the officials blamed Beckham for the disaster.I think they all are jelouse of him!!!!!!!!!
And sorry to say Steve McLaren is a big headed man and wants to show that he is the man who makes decision.....But he shoul realise that Beckham is the most experiensed player and he can & will do many things for the team ...and without Beckham England will not Qualify for Euro 2008.So he should think not only twice but for 100 times while he still has the chance....I N Ahsan

Karma to Butcher and McLarren soon Capello ?!.... how ironic all is.

Butcher the so "brilliant multiple World Cup Winner" TM and Becks critic gets fired.

England don't even play football, don't create much, are shambless

What a Becks delivery could do...

Marie-
I remember Rooney saying Becks helped him with his temper--just by talking to him during practice and matches.
I also remember Crouch explaining how Becks taught him how to avoid getting so many fouls due to his height, "he kept telling me to keep my arms down, that I didn't have to raise my arms to jump--and I don't, its been great."
