David Beckham loves football

I may win an award for the worst or at least most obvious heading ever, with this one! Still sometimes the obvious needs repeating. I have been reading countless press stories in recent days, that treat David Beckham as a dollar sign, as a commercial entity and as a means to someone elses ends. Still lets for one minute place the face that launched a thousand crushes to one side, lets forget the adverts and the movie cameos, for just a moment lets forget the money, the mania, the beckham effect and remember that he is a man. He is a footballer. He was a skinny little kid, all knees and elbows that practiced his heart out and grew up to live his dream.
Whatever team David Beckham plays for and whether luck is with him or against him on any given day, David Beckham is first, last and always someone who loves his football. He always wants to play, he is always prepared to train hard, he only has one level of committment, 110%, he only has one way to play, all out. David Beckham loves football and every time he misses a game it's a disappointment for him. So many people have an opinion on David Beckham but anyone who doesn't know that doesn't have a right to an opinion because they have not taken the time to understand what lies at the heart of the player. I have taken a clip from the Bye Bye Becks DVD which will hopefully say what I am trying to say better than I can. It shows the little boy that grew up to be the man that is David Beckham. I hope that following the Champions League disappointment it might be something nice to see that will cheer us all up! It also seems the right time to show this, with Becks scheduled to appear at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

You won't believe this, but I have been so frustrated about the same thing that I JUST finished emailing a lengthy letter to a writer at the Toronto Star saying the exact same thing, with details, comparisons and everything but illustrations! And I live nowhere near Toronto! I guess some things just need to be said:)

Yeah I saw the Toronto Star article and that is by no means the worst of them. I realise some american writers and soccer fans "know not what they do" but at the moment they are making those of us who have been Beckham fans for some time really scared and really frankly depressed. I have been a supporter of his move to the US and I'll stick to that as he has a right to do what he wants with his life and also he was put in a near impossible position thanks to RM and McClaren but I am really starting to feel nervous about it as there is a strong attitude coming through that suggests all they want is to exploit him and in a very ugly way that really has little do with sport and all to do with business.

Hi Anna, yes I am reading those too. I responded to the Star because it seemed to be written by an actual sportswriter--but I get the urge to reply to all of them! I think its time for me to send you my Stateside Reception notes as there is more to be hopeful about than seems apparent from the press. And don't forget how long Americans have been seeing our athletes exploited for massive sums...the one thing our sportsfans can recognize is what's real and what isn't (positive note #1). We all know they are certainly getting the real thing--and better appreciate it!!

I know, i got nervous too when I saw an article on Beckham's injury on People Magazine's website (its an entertainment website, and I don't think they report sports injuries). And what's a bit irritating about the article is that they use the word 'source' as their point of reference for their story its as if Beckham's injury and his reaction is a rumuor. I mean its in the official injury report of the club.
