Real Madrid 2 - 1 Valencia

happy becksThe official match report is online here.

The first of the photos from the game are in the gallery and thanks to a generous Becks fan, Amanda, I have also added some large photos of David Beckham at training earlier in the week here.

David Beckham came on as a substitute in the 65th minute and within 7 minutes had set up the match winning goal with Sergio Ramos heading in from a Becks free kick. He had an outstanding game adding much needed impetus to the attack with his perfectly placed passes and crosses turning the tide in Real Madrids favor. It was great to see the smile on his face at the end, he will have missed playing and he certainly enjoyed being back!

Fabio Capello acknowledged his performance had been key to Real Madrid's second half saying in the post match press conference (Source)
“I liked my team a lot. The first-half with Gago and Higuain playing very well and the second with the quality of Beckham and Guti was key, although also the pace was slower and there was more space for everyone."

On Beckham's return, Capello added: "He recovered from his injury this week and played very well. I asked him before the game if he could play and he said 'yes'. He's going to America, but that's the club's problem, not mine. He is contracted to us so he can play for us."
P.S If you haven't already seen them, there are three videos of David and Victoria Beckham in Paris available at Splash video in the Guest archive.

Hi Tiette - the fan gave Becks a shirt - Becks was really nice about it and handled the situation well considering the guy came running on during the game!

I FINALLY SAW A REGULAR SEASON GAME ON TV (I was only able to find Champions League before)! It was SO exciting. I was in a bar which went nuts along with the Bernebau when Becks came. The goal assist was great but so were 3 to 4 other PERFECT passes, including one incredibly long one to Robinho which was classic. He just has so much presence, it really does affect the team, and the knee injury certainly didn't seem to affect his ability or inclination to cover ground--as usual!
Great to watch.

I completely agree :) I still can't stop thinking about it! And by the way, nice as it was for Capello to acknowledge Becks, Valencia were hussling more in the second half not less, and the passes were well placed in traffic (or over traffic!) not open space. I think there were many great moments for a lot of the RM players.

Hi D :)

Exactly I mean Valencia scored their equaliser in the last 45 minutes not the first 45 but the fact Capello mentioned Becks and actually spoke his name is the equivalent of another manager saying "great game" lol as we know how praise and credit for any player other than those Capello personally chose to bring to the club sticks in his throat lol I did post a note to say that but then the news item was turning into War and Peace so I edited it out :))

he he, I agree Capello's praise speakes volume even if its given begrudgingly :) Great game for Beckham and Real Madrid...The fans really love him :)

Actually Capello was a little more positive than I first thought - it turns out the official club website had edited Capello's comments pretty heavily but I found a transcript and he was very complimentary by Capello's standards and deservedly so as Becks is quality!

Hi guys,
VERY interesting. Hadn't registered that only the handed picked get more praise by Capello, but do see it now. Re edited comments, I have always suspected that Capello's antipathy for Becks was sold to him by management upon his arrival because before the U.S. announcement he had been talking about Becks as stabilizing and necessary on the pitch: down right won-over for Capello! I also think the Club fed him whatever made him so angry after the announcement (they were clearly inclined to lie through their teeth to everyone else from then on). So it's even more interesting that the club is still SO bitter, not first time I've noticed that they only feature Becks now when it would be too obvious not too, or its too good an opportunity for marketing. Who cares, the rest of the universe can see easily for itself!
My now two favorite sportswriters (from AS), Alfredo Relano and Tomas Roncero, are making me want to learn Spanish to read them untranslated! I think Tomas actually referred to Becks as the diamond in RM's jewel, and something to the effect of Capello giving it away because it didn't strike his fancy (or because he was the fall-guy for the two nitwits higher up!!).
Both Becks and fans already seem emotional. Its going to be an interesting 7 weeks, hopefully including some extra joy for Becks and Roberto Carlos along the way.
D ;)
