David Beckham and team-mates
update 2 - David Beckham attended a party for Roberto Carlos yesterday photos in the gallery.
It's a slightly slower news days than usual for Becks! Something which hardly ever happens. So I have decided to post some of my favorite photos of David Beckham with his team-mates, including a few with Roberto Carlos who is 34 years old today, Happy Birthday to him, photos here. These are old photos and you may be familiar with all or most but the photos of Becks having a joke, celebrating and even commiserating with his team-mates are amongst those I like best as the spirit of comraderie is a part of what makes football such a beautiful game!
In other news, The Sun has details of the new tattoo David Beckham was sporting Sunday at the Real Madrid v Osasuna game. The Tattoo contains the number 23 as you can clearly see in this photo and according to The Sun has the words of a Roman poem etched above a picture of a guardian angel with wings, shrouded in flames. The roman poem reads Let them hate as long as they fear.
Update - David Beckham remained in the Gymn during today's training session, suggesting he may have had some small set back to his recovery at the end of last week. The training report is online here. Let's all hope that he is back to full strength soon.

I do not think that he wants people to fear him. The point is that people fear him because of who he is, as they continue to see him as a threat to their survival,their existence or their own desire to get to the top or to stay on top and be powerful, whether it be in sports or otherwise.
He is regarded as a cultural icon who has trancscended his sport and has used his looks,fashion sense, style and lifestyle to achieve his wealth and status and at the same time he remains a dedicated sportsman who loves the game and inspires so many because he appeals to a wide cross-section of people - men, women and kids love him for various reasons.
One example of the hate was the announcement of his move to America. He came in for a lot of criticism and hate because people resented his wealth and his decision to move on and to do what he thinks is right for him at this stage in his life. The reaction showed that he is really still powerful and remains a dedicated athlete, icon and sportsman and not the faded icon on whom they were so desperate to write an obituary.
The whole point is that people who keep hating are really weak and powerless and perhaps hate something about themselves and in hating they make that person whom they hate even more powerful because of the fear they themselves have.

Well said to the person above, I think the important distinction to make is that the line only relates to the people who hate, not to people in general.

I do not love the tattoo but I have noticed that it makes them according to to a particular moment of its life, in bottom does not damage nobody. With regard to the phrase task it is turned to those who do not love it unfortunately (are). Example in Italy the press and the tv. it is not never benevolent towards he and its family. My sons instead say that it is a good person because he has a beautiful smile. Gabriel advises to David the arm of the Prayer. We wish David to return soon to play. Hello. L.S.G. I think that quote is pretty close to how athletes speak before big competitions. Becks is about to begin a major challenge -- and he's been accused of going on vacation instead, so those words certainly send the message that he means business. Whether he liked it consciously for that reason or just because it inspires him in the face of another dose of criticism, I agree with Loredana, Samuele, and Gabriele, that the tattoos go along with specific times in his life.
As the Madrid fans say, he is both a gentleman and a warrior. I am looking forward to him proving that point yet again when he gets to the U.S.

Anne as I said in the previous message, with regard to the fact that the Italian press always puts in bad light David, going in Internet I have read a news just on Alice or Virgilio.it must make clic on. Sport and then on all the news of ok news. This news describes it like that it gives one smack to the poverty. I will always follow it even if the news is embarrassing. In fact I have not made it to read to the children because they see it like a clean and loving man of their preferred sport. Himself this news is not true as ago to defend itself from this bad image? I would want that the press and people exalted its soccer dowries and are sure also human. Excuse if with this news you I have rendered sad as I am and gives pain a lot to me. HELLO Loredana

Hi there, I'm sorry you can't see the photos. I checked the gallery and it's working fine. It's just standard internet pages and the album I added when I was last on has been viewed over 700 times so I think people can access the gallery just fine - it will be an issue with your PC and settings sorry.
Loredana, I'm sorry to say I can't follow what you have written exactly but I think you are referring to the fact that there is and has always been a lot in the press about Becks that really is just made up. One of the things to do is to always assess the source as some newspapers are a little more reputable than others but even the best papers misreport things sometimes. It is as David Beckham said, impossible for him to counter as he would spend his whole life in court suing the media.
Diane, I agree with what you say about the poem and also it may have some historical context, it might have been recited on the eve of battle or been part of some ancient war-cry - who knows, not I :)

Hi Anna,
The Upper School kids around here say that its based on a Caligula quote: "Let them hate me, so long as they fear me." First, I'm glad the 'me' part was left off, and second, I hope Becks recalls as little of those school days as I do and wasn't going for the EXACT history behind the line!!! :)
By the way, congrats on the ManU match!!!! They were truly brilliant.

The upper school kids are a little bit out - it's not based on anything Caligula said - he did like the poem and he liked to quote it but the poem was written by Lucius Accius Telephus and he penned it more than a 100 years before Caligula was born. What I meant was that I don't know what meaning or ritual it was written to serve when it was penned - it's a little before my time :))

Loradena, I love reading your notes. Our families sound similar. Only my husband has to be patient because he remembers more football than I do and he has to answer my questions! (In exchange I watch matches with him that are only on TV here early in the morning!).

According to Wikipedia the motto of James College at the University of York is this phrase "let them hate, as long as they fear". If it is true, this phrase may have more positive meaning or deeper meaning than literal meaning of this phrase. Becks is wise. I think he completely studied about this phrase before he got tattoo.
