Becks a great Briton!

David Beckham Great Britons Awards David Beckham attended the Greatest Britons 2007 Ceremony in London last night. He was presented with the Greatest Briton Overseas award for global achievement in recognition of his contribution to his country on and off the pitch, including his work on London's successful Olympic 2012 bid.

The award was presented by Arsenal forward and friend Thierry Henry and David Beckham received a standing ovation from the audience! Watch the video

There are photos of David Beckham and Dame Helen Mirren on the red carpet in the gallery. Dame Helen was delighted to have her photo taken with Becks and was overheard saying "Oh my how exciting!" She also said, when asked about her red carpet companion David Beckham, "I am absolutely speechless. What can I say? He is the best of Britain in every way. He is a great icon for this country." There is also more coverage and a list of winners available at ITV.

The Sun reported that Becks said of receiving the award: “This is an honour and a privilege.” He also thanked his wife and family.

Congratulations to Becks on this well deserved honour!

In other news-

* The discussion of a possible England recall for David Beckham continues to be a hot topic in british sport pages. With columnists who have been unduly critical of Becks in the past now joining the call for his return. Here is one example from The Guardian.

Guillem Balague reports in AS Diario that Steve McClaren held a dinner meeting with journalists last week and let them know that if David Beckham played well against Recreativo Huelva, he would consider recalling him. The journalists followed up with McClaren after Sunday's game and the feedback was positive. This may explain why all journalists are now predicting a recall. David Beckham did of course play exceptionally well against Recre. His passing was sublime, his crosses inch perfect.

The England squad to play the friendly against Brazil is expected to be named this Saturday morning. I am trying hard not to count my chickens, or anything else for that matter, before they hatch, but it is hard not to feel a little suspense at the very least. It would be a rare moment of justice if David Beckham was recalled and a wrong, inflicted on a dedicated, professional and patriotic sportsman, righted. It would be a great day.

David Beckham and Roberto Carlos* Roberto Carlos was interviewed in AS and paid special tribute to his good friend David Beckham saying (approximate translation), "He has been very good for Madrid, an example on and off the pitch, by virtue of his personality and his joy! He is a football player and it shows, he is a very Brazilian Englishman”.

* LA Galaxy drew 1-1 with Chivas USA in their second "super clasico" of the season. Match details here.

* Finally, there are a number of new videos on the official Real Madrid site and one via the spanish portal is titled Beckham spectacular. I can't get any of the sites videos to play for me currently. You can click here to visit the site and I hope you will have more joy with loading the clips than I have!

Update - Today's training report in english is online here.

Aaaawwww...so nice.

Nice comments from Helen Mirren. I remember she said he would be a good actor. And I didn't like it.
But after those nice comments I forgive her. LoL!

Titi giving an award to him again. Hehe. Super!

I'm wondering when Becks will present an award to Henry. :-)

They are so cute together (this seems a theme re anyone hanging around Becks!!!, hmmm). Ms Mirren is so classy with a really sly sense of humor, I can imagine they truly had fun during the photos.

Roberto Carlos, the best! And his quote is even better for me because when Becks went to Madrid, Ronaldo tried to describe what a great player he was and finally just said, "he's so good he could be Brazilian!" That's double confirmation that our boy can "dance" on the pitch with the best ;-D ! (As we have known all along of course...)

Hi there!

As I could read in the match comments, the atmosphere was... humm... quite relaxed :-))
Fortunately you all are not cardiac (well, I hope so!!)
Maybe we could become cardiac by dint of worrying for David ;-)
If he ever was told that he drives people cardiac he sure could not believe it...

Cheers for the match and for the award. I think he deserves every award that exists... And the first one simply for being who he is.

To the person who asked, Victoria is in LA probably because of their coming move there (she has to find schools for the children etc.)
But he was not alone, as her mother was with him and received an award as well ;-))

Thanks Diane for the information about David's long sleeves. I often wonder why he wears long sleeves shirts while the others don't.

I can't watch the video either (on RM site). I guess it's only for spanish members (it seems that you can't register as a member if you're not spanish...)...

And Anna, one more time, thanks for everything you do on this great site (perhaps I'm gonna give a call to David someday to let him know about the amazing work you do!)

Cheers!

each quote makes the leaving a bit harder.

and how cute was helen excited that he knocked into her boob?

Just forgot to say that as we say in France (maybe it's the same in english?), the wheel always turns someday and now it's turned in David's favour as last!

your quote works with david's life quote laurance. "it's a round world"

Sorry I don't understand what you mean Tanique...

Anonymous tanique33 said...

ha, i was just saying that your french quote is similar to david's quote that he says all the time. "it's a round world" it means what yours does. you can be on top of the world, or the bottom, but you always have a chance to be on top again.

it's like what you said about the wheel.

[Yet another complaint about Becks treatment in the press, apologies in advance if it's too much of a rant for this fine week! ]
I was enjoying my last comment too thoroughly to include what I think about the otherwise excellent Guardian article. I agree with Anna about columnists doing a welcome turnaround regarding Becks return to the England squad. But even then, so many feel the need to hold back a fistfull when giving Becks his due. It's a great piece, loved the comparison to current No 7 as well as all the details re what Becks brings to the game, and the strong support for his recall. Then Mr Williams had to include the classic weak, and absurd, excuses about why he joined the bandwagon of Becks bashers when Becks was dropped from the squad.
These still just STEAM me. A captain staking claim to his place in the squad? Just like EVERY other team captain on earth--many when showing significantly poorer form than Becks ever had for England. He would have been criticized as a poor leader or shirker if he had not shown his usual passion to get out there (setting aside the fact that he deserved to be). Fitness? England were always eager to rush him back after injuries, just as they have been with other great players (sometimes with indifference to the player's best interests).
THEN, I may scream if I once more hear the excuse about the Beckhams' "5 star lifestyle/leading role in turning England's World Cup into circus..." There's hardly a player in England's starting XI that leads a humble lifestyle, they're all incredibly wealthy. Becks doesn't drink, Victoria was roundly criticized for only going out with the other spouses once -- for dinner not shopping (and not the drunken table-dancing dinner either) so I'm not sure how either of their mere "existence(s) drained the squad of core values..." Hogwash.
The only fair observation might have been the extra press and crowds that accompany Becks, had not England been ecstatic to milk both for all they were was worth when it came to free publicity and a massive boost in marketing.

As you can see, I remain annoyed, and would GREATLY appreciate it if MacClaren would recall Becks, set right a grievous wrong, make him and his fans (or any fan with sense) ecstatic, and allow me to enjoy international football again without muttering to myself on the sofa!

i honestly think he'll be recalled. although, i've always felt that. i said the other day, it's to the point, where he is out of reasons NOT to. so, i'm expecting good news.

laurance, your english is great. now, if only my french was as good as your english. so anna, since you helped his english, can you help my french? lol

And I'm ok to improve you french as soon as you want to! (Anna has so many other things to do...)

yup, about becks and posh lifestyle...they seem to only go out when there's a celebration, like birthdays and stuff, and the press considers it excessive---i don't get it. Other footballers earn more than becks and is involve in a couple of mishaps when they go out...okay enough ranting....just positive energy for the england recall and la liga title :)
