David Beckham assist maestro!

David Beckham is zipiDavid Beckham is on the cover of Marca for the second day in a row , click to view full size. The cover, as you can see, proclaims "this is the league of zipi and Zape!". I think Becks is zipi! Details of both players contributions are given.

AS.com reports this morning that David Beckham is tied with Guti for the most assists by a Real Madrid player this season with a tally of six. They also say that if it had not been for injury and the stubborness of Capello he would have more. He has been providing excellent and also crucial service to his team mates in recent weeks. So far this season he has made three assists to Ramos, one to Robinho, one to Raul and one to Van Nistelrooy. Full story here. It is great to see full credit for his contribution, in the spanish media and there is also a video on the Real Madrid website which you can access through the spanish page called El mago 'the magician' David Beckham which also celebrates his important assists.

The Independent have an excellent match report "Real Madrid 3 Deportivo La Coruna 1: Beckham crowns England recall with Real surge to title", with lots of poignant details about how beloved David Beckham is by the Bernabeu faithful, read the story

Sid Lowe, has devoted his weekly column on Spanish football to David Beckham. He talks about David Beckham's great game against Deprtivo mentioning that the defeated Deportivo players whispered, "he was unbelievable". The Deportivo goalkeeper Didi Aouate said: "Beckham was involved in everything. He crossed with both feet, he took all the free kicks, he took shots, he led the attacks, he carried his team-mates." It is a well written column about David Beckham's imminent departure from Real Madrid and how it came to pass. Read the column and he also has a slightly different piece in The Telegraph

I've also added another 20 or so photos from the last Real Madrid game to the gallery.

More England recall reaction

david beckham warms up

Ryan Giggs, Becks former Manchester United team-mate and friend has told the press how pleased he was to see David Beckham recalled for England saying,“I’m delighted for David. He’s been outstanding for Real Madrid since before Christmas...he’s been key to them getting back to the top of the league. His ability is unquestioned, I’m very pleased for him and hope he does well."

Peter Crouch told Sky Sports "David Beckham is a top, top player and has been for a number of years now. Obviously, as a forward his delivery from dead balls and wide areas, from anywhere, is top class. For me, it's probably pleasing. As I've said, his crosses into the box and his delivery, and passing ability, is only going to help players. It will help me personally. It's the manager's decision to pick whoever he chooses and I certainly don't think anyone in the squad would argue with David Beckham's inclusion."

The Sun has an article predicting that David Beckham will reach 100 caps for his country provided they win in Estonia, full story here. Sticking with The Sun, they also have an article about how delighted Stevie G reportedly is to see Becks back in the team as well as more quotes from Ruud Van Nistelrooy on David Beckham's tremendous form!

Finally, further to comments made by LA Galaxy President, Alexi Lalas, yesterday, that the business would be reluctant to release David Beckham for non-competitive England matches, The Independent has an article this morning that explains that David Beckham has a clause in his contract to say he must be released for all England games including friendlies, more details here. The article says that David Beckham is understood to be adamant that he will not be prevented from representing England and would even invoke Fifa regulations that dictate players must be released for international duty.

England schedule

England will train at 3PM today at London Colney, Arsenal's Hertfordshire training ground. The session is open to the public. The Football Association has no plans to have David Beckham do any press work ahead of the Brazil match.

Ben, Ben are you out there? lol Am I right in thinking that with Owen Hargreaves injured Becks will wear 7? I remember you explaining the rules regarding shirt numbers for Internationals I just can't remember what you said lol! If you swing by can you answer the first commenters question?

Hi Anna and all others :)

Allright I'll try to

for England Games (bar the tournaments, when you have to assign the whole sqaud numbers from 1-23) the starting eleven players have to be given the numbers 1-11.

Since usually Owen Hagreaves had the 7 till now and is out (injuried or supended) the number 7 should be free again.

Becks is certain to start - and deservedly so (otherwise why would McLarren go trough all that hype and media attention)

so I guess Becks will be the 1st England Senior Player to wear the number 7 at the New Wembley :)

- thanks for all those links and articles and images and videos btw !

Let's enjoy another of Becks great combacks and fingers crossed a spanish title, a wembley goal by him, good matches with england so he can reach 100 caps and more.

Ben (a 7 fanatic)

Good beginning week to all, especially to our champion. We are sure that him it will have number 7. The Galaxy will give problems him? We hope not, also because they will have of the advantages with him in national. Samuele is convinced that David will not refuse no call of the country, will play also the friendly match Hello Loredana, Samuele, Gabriel.

Hi Loredana, I don't know if you will understand this hopefully it will translate ok :) but Samuele is quite right Becks will never refuse the call of his country and the newspapers are reporting that he has a clause to make sure he can play for England in his contract and that he is determined to do so if he is called. Also under Fifa rules the lA Galaxy can not refuse to release him.

I have to say I was umimpressed by Lalas. I have seen with several things that have happened in the last four months that the organisation is rather amateurish and not used to handling a player of Becks status but they need to understand everything they say will be reported in every corner of the globe and that comments can bge sensationalised and caution needs to be exercised, any comment that can be made into a big story if it related to David Beckham, will most certainly make headlines and run and run.

Whenever a matter is in anyway sensitive they must, MUST, communicate with him directly and not via the press. If they don't want him to play certain games, that is an in-house conversation, a private discussion - if and when it comes up. To put it in the media at this moment when Becks has had to wait so long for a recall and really hopes to play for England in the future and get to 100+ caps, to show reluctance, to say the trip is long and takes a toll and to mention health issues - that was unforgivably unnecessary. Let him play these games in peace and wait and see if the future calls come, why raise such negative issues and make such destructive comments in a radio interview with an English media organisation - the BBC - at this time? I was very disappointed by this behaviour. It was unprofessional and inappropriate.

I have criticized Calderon and Mijatovic in the past for behaving in this way and so I am sad to realise that the LA Galaxy president has no more common sense than to engage in the same behaviour. He really needs to be media savvy enough and professional enough to know a lot of things should be discussed directly with David Beckham and his team and that literally millions of people don't really need to be a party to it.

Anyway, bottom-line Becks can play friendlies, it just would have been prefferable if the LA Galaxy had had some passing knowledge of Fifa's rules and they hadn't gone public with the fact they would prefer he didn't.

absolutely agree ann. airing your grievances, SO SOON, is ridiculous. they are setting up david to the bad guy already.

i always knew there was an england clause. there was no way he wouldn't have one, in place. but, to go on about how it might hurt the league and team is RIDICULOUS, when you knew going in, if he was recalled he would play for his national team.

it's pre mature to discuss anyway, but to do it in the media is never a good thing. like i said, i don't like the idea of david being set up like the villian, whne he plays for england. because they have set their (the mls) whole future on him, is unfair anyway.

but, as they move forward they need to take a more professional approach to their issues, meaning keep it out of the press.

Hi everyone!

Believe it or nor, I missed you guys all w-e long!
My w-e started by catastrophes (storms, torrential rain, ground slides, mud torrent, flooded houses, a piece of road took away with mud...) in "my" village BUT I could get all the information I needed!

Fortunately my mother in law has tv via satellite and by dint checking all sport chanels I could learn by satdurday evening that Becks has been recalled.
I was so happy, so happy, so happy...
I could see the RM squad training before the match on RM TV, and later in the evening I could see that they had won. One more happiness.
At a moment, my mother in law asked me whether I was drunk :-) I didnt behave quite normally!!
And finally on sunday afternoon i could see the 2nd half of the match against Deportivo.
What a happy w-e for me.

I was in a hurry to connect on this site to "meet" you guys again and just at the time I swiched my computer on there was blackout for several hours because of stroms and wind and I had to wait still!
Now I'm back and as I can see I have many things to read. But before starting to read, I wanted to drop a line (...well... several lines...) here.

Sorry 4 being so chatty!

PS : I think I'm going to write a song : light my candle ;-))

yup, I agree, they should avoid airing grievances in the media (like what Real Madrid did) when they have not talked to the player concern.

I guess the LA Galaxy while realising what Beckham can do for their club forget that they should also provide some benefits for Beckham.

laurance, good to have you back. you had a lot going on, at the village. but at least you got some of the news. have fun catching up, and looking at all the picss.

marie, the thing is, it was in his contract, so they can't act all surprised. i think they thought he might not have been recalled and swept it away. but, that is their fault.

i just read about FIFA stepping in and saying they can't prevent any player from playing in friendlies. i just think this is getting way too ugly ,too soon, and it's already spinning out of control.

from what was excitement just 2 days ago, is turning into unecessary drama. none of us wants to see david's commitment being questioned, and it looks like where it's headed. all of this, without a word from david.

it's a shame. i can't believe how blown up this ha become already.

Anne a Galaxy must learn as well as from European soccer (are sure that David will teach they is like plays itself that like managing the rules that are around to soccer.) the Galaxy will only have the honor of having him in their square because they are happened of the things that they have convinced DAVID to take this decision. David however has one that gives the Sky that takes cureOF him (the photo of MARCA where him our thought turns the look to the sky confirmation). We must be serene and to enjoy this moment happy .SPERIAMO FOR HAVING TRANSLATE EXACT.Loredana,Samuele,Gabriele

Welcome back Laurance :) Keep on lighting those candles :)

I agree Marie they have to remember they have responsibilities to him as well and not shooting their mouth off to the BBC is definitely one of them :)

Tanique I don't quite understand what you mean. Who's going to question Becks committment to whom?

7:43 AM

Blogger rpm said...

sorry Loredana I didn't see your reply - don't worry I am happy over all and happy for Becks! - it's just I would prefer if this interview and the resulting coverage hadn't happened :)

yes, we are all still THRILLED for david. it just sucks that all the other stuff has interfered with the excitement.

anna, i just meant in general, i don't want to see david's commitment being questioned. from all i've read, the galaxy is sort of setting up an "us or them" scenario. they've already thrown around "david has commited to us" quotes. so, that was what i meant. i hope it doesnt come to them publicly questioning david's commitment to the team.

i'll say this, this is all a lesson in how NOT to welcome a player to a new team.

Terrible comments, and worse because Lalas said several months ago that Galaxy would "NEVER stand in the way of David playing for his country..."!
Lalas raised the same questions about their young Landon Donovan re U.S. duty, saying he'll have to make choices and remember his responsibilities to the team.
Terribly unsporting -- poor management, poor P.R., and certainly NOT a public discourse !
That team is in trouble if it is so dependent on two players (only one at the moment). If I were Lalas I would worry more about what the "current spotlight" on his team reveals, than making statements that might cast the slightest aspersion on any player Galaxy are (extremely) lucky enough to have who has the talent to play for their country -- let alone Becks' extraordinary talent.
A GREAT deal more respect is required.

Diane,

They are in trouble and at such times you often see kneejerk reactions to things. LA Galaxy is joint bottom of the league - but that's really a reason to stop giving international interviews and turn your attention to your own backyard and what is going wrong that has happened not what might happen.

Oh yes, all the Madrid press is praising him. El Mundo, El País, ABC...all these newspapers wrote lovely articles about his big role to take RM to the top of the spanish league.

Some of them also mentioned Ruud, but Becks is the one to blame for Madrid being the leader...all the newspapers agree with that.

Oh and the crowd screaming his name. I just love when they do it. Really nice of them to do it.
And he gave his shirt to one of the members of the Ultra Surs, according to the spanish press.

Hi Siniestro - yes in the clip I posted you see him give his shirt to the Ultra Surs. It is great to see all the credit he is getting I think Ruud deserves a lot of credit too so I personally liked the it's the league of zipi and zape comment - made me laugh :))
