Go 'King David'!

Tonight's match against Recreativo Huelva is the first of the remaining "four finals" Real Madrid faces and a win is, as always, crucial! David Beckham is playing on the right of midfield as Emerson is out injured and Gago will start in his central role. I have added three photos of David Beckham arriving in Huelva last night to the gallery.
You can read a match preview at Sporting Life and also there is a good article in The Times which mentions today's match but also discusses Real Madrid's La Liga bid and David Beckham's departure from the club. It translates a portion of Roncero's column published in AS Diario yesterday which was an especially nice tribute to Becks -
“Sir Beckham [sic] deserves to bid farewell on June 17 at the Bernabeu with a league title in his travel bag and the whole stadium on their feet saluting the dignity and sense of honour he has given to this institution. King David, impeccable professional, good guy and magnificent footballer.”The full column can be found at AS.com I am working on a translation in the meantime you can translate it via babelfish.
Let's hope that Real Madrid win and take another step towards realizing the dream of winning the title! It is Iker Casillas's 26th birthday today and I'm sure it's the only present he wants! So in honor of this,
Hala Madrid, Go Becks!
and Go Iker!
David Beckham tipped for England return
The Daily Mail are tipping David Beckham for a recall. They suggest that his recent form at Real Madrid might see Steve McClaren name Becks next Saturday in the squad to play a friendly against Brazil on June 1 and the Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia 5 days later. Full story here. There is an extensive article "David Beckham: Coming to America" in the Sunday Times which takes a detailed look at David Beckham's move Stateside and some of the challenges. This is tough reading as it raises many concerns.

That Times article is incredibly depressing because it raises so many issues that really make me fear for our lad. I'd give anything to be able to save him from all of this. I'm starting to really think Simon Fuller is going to be for Becks what Colonel Parker was for Elvis :(
10:56 PM
That's a nice quote! He is a good guy :0)
12:33 AM
i so much hope that he gets his recall now, since i live in estonia;D
1:02 AM
happy birthday Iker :) :) hope the team wins this one for him. yup, anna, that article is a tough read, however Becks interview comforted me somewhat that he is realistic in what he can do when he comes to LA...and he knows more than most that things happen for a reason, and we all wish him the best. An England recall with a win in the England team while he is in LA would be great and would prove everyone wrong.

Thanks for the pics of David. I love the quote from Roncero, it is so true, "King David, impeccable professional, good guy and magnificent footballer.”"-- Loves it! Go Madrid and Happy Bday to Iker!

10:03 AM
goal...assist by beckham :)
10:13 AM
he he the commentator just said that all these players are in the bench, higuain, guti, reyes,...but put beckham in the pitch and you'll be happy"
marie
10:14 AM
lol Robinho assisted by Becks!!! Great start :))
10:15 AM
yup syd, i was just making myself feel better, cause I'm really going to miss beckham in Europe :) they need to score more goals :) 1-0 is just giving me mini heart attacks when recreativo is pushing, my commentator attaches "amazing" to every skill he is exalting to the players, i think he is a real madrid fan :)
Marie
10:53 AM
they do need to score more goals Becks is having a good game and creating lots of opportunities they'll get there - RM seem to be a "second half" team I'm always glad if we can get half way through the first half without the opps scoring as we always seem more likely to concede in the first 25 minutes lol
10:57 AM
yes yes 2-0 breathing a little easier now :) Capello is still all serious, the commentator is suggesting to take rud out of the game to avoid the 5th yellow card. Beckham is ggod at deflecting the ball i'm a little afraid of his knee being injured again with all the deflecting he's doing all throughout the match, but its good defending nevertheless :)
Marie
11:17 AM
a little breathing space is always nice. Sry for writing war and peace on other things in the middle of the match Anna!
11:20 AM
oh no, beckham's upset, he must be careful, lest he get sent off.
Marie
11:22 AM
just a yellow phew... have to be careful of temperamental spanish refs and not given them an excuse -thats for sure!
Syd, sorry I removed your comment not because of anything you wrote but just because the game is on
I've put the first pics in the gallery for anyone who isn't able to watch it on TV.
11:28 AM
oh no 2-1, Real Madrid sure do keep us on edge...come Real, score more goals...
Marie
11:36 AM
penalty sigh. C'mon boys!! you can do it. Be so nice if Becks got a goal today :)
11:38 AM
i guess we are not the only ones on edge they just showed capello, banging the head board of the dug out and making big hand gestures on his seat....
Marie
11:38 AM
the referee has been deflecting the ball all throughout the match...

The times article is interesting and brings up some valid points about the press pressure, access and schedule. But he seems to be an adaptable guy, not as high-maintenance as people think and he knows what its like to be the focal point and under pressure. There'll be challenges but I think he'll work it out.
11:46 AM
oh no 2 all, come on real madrid
11:46 AM
uh-oh C'mon guys!!! Dig deep you can do it!!!
11:48 AM
roberto caarlos, yehey....
11:51 AM
the commentator is going loco, he is a real madrid fan :)
11:52 AM
ROFLOL they are going to kill me seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Roberto Carlos!!! Marry Me Roberto :))
11:54 AM
the media is swamping roberto carlos :) good for him as he did not have a good first half, he more than made up for it :)
Marie
11:55 AM
all I can say is thank god for that!
11:57 AM
I'm glad, I stayed up for this...:), my sister who is not a foot ball fan, just got scared of me, shouting and cheering that roberto carlos goal :)
Marie
12:00 PM
lol Marie - I can imagine. That's the third week in a row where we've won by one goal and goals are scored by us or opps in the last 5 minutes of the game. Seriously, it's touch and go whether my heart will last the season :) It sure is exciting though!! ;)
12:04 PM
still la liga leaders gonna watch the barca game now just out of interst :)
12:04 PM
whew, I'm gonna need them to secure the last three wins a little earlier than extra time.
12:20 PM
Sure would be the icing on the cake if Barca drop some points
12:29 PM
thanks for the pics is of great help for someone like me that is unable to watch the game :)
12:35 PM
you're welcome - so mnay lovely photos this week too :) The team had a bit of an orgy of happiness after the third goal lol lots of cute cute pics :)
Syd, it's just as well we rely only on our own victories now as Barcelona are winning 3-0
1:02 PM
question ..
I notice in the new pics Beck is the only one with long sleeve while the other players have short why is that
1:05 PM
quite the orgy from what I see wish I could be in the middle of it lol :D
Maria
1:08 PM
Barcelona beat Atletico 6-0 and I always thought that was the match where Barcelona was most likely to drop points! It's goes to show you just never know in football
2:00 PM
Actually traveled to watch the match today and I was SOOO happy. Bar full of mostly Spanish RM fans. Insane!!! Still nice to get back here and read everyone's match experiences! I had to walk past about three subway (metro?) stops before getting on a train after the match just to get my heart to a normal rate!! I certainly will need breathing lessons soon. (And Anna, not fair that you're not married and can grab Roberto Carlos all to yourself!).
Syd, sorry I missed you riling up the troops--you got two of my greatest passions, sports and Elvis into one little post! Still, for now all I can think is: congrats to the boys and to everyone pulling for them--a great day!!!
Note: Becks has worn long sleeves more than other players for years, even during some brutally hot matches. I once thought it saved him sunscreen (lol he IS fair skinned), then he once said that some places found the tattoos offensive. But it seems more random now.

The Times article is a painful reading.
Some of the topics, like if he will fit in, is completely out of the way. Who cares if he will fit in with the LA celebrities/high profile people?
It maybe be important for Victoria, but not sure if it is very important to him.
He just wants to be a football ambassador and to show football to many people as he can in US. Maybe the fit in thing can be good for him to promote the football...not sure. But don't think it is a big problem. Because I believe that after some time not many celebrity interested people/media will go crazy about him. Only football people will still be amazed with him playing there. And that's what matters most.
But some other topics are serious ones. He will have lots of pressure to succeed on this thing to promote football over there.
But as he said during some interviews, I think he is very conscious about it. About his importance over there as a football ambassador. But it will be lots of pressure. Hope he handles it well.
What I think is horrible is the whole media attention they will get, especially and mostly during the first year. It will be a completely nightmare for the whole family. To me, they are already leaving a nightmare with the paparazzi and I fear it will get worse.
Hope their sons can be left alone.
Off the pitch I also think that will be loads, but loads of stories of him being unfaithful and stuff, because he is a new face there and the women will go over him, surely. Just like it happened when he was in Madrid and it was terrible. It affected him on the pitch and was a completely bad time.
I just wish there won't be female secretaries coming out saying things and making him and his family sad again.
Unfortunately, I think it wasn't a good decision, but we as fans, will always support him.
He could have stayed playing in Europe for three more years, for sure. And it is all RM's fault.
People say Victoria persuaded him. I certainly don't think so. Becks is a wise man, he knows what he wants. Obviously Victoria's opinion was important because she is his wife and he cares about his wife and family, but if Real Madrid behaviour was different, he would have stayed.
No comments about Simon Fuller. Becks respects him and stuff, but I really don't consider him a good thing for his football career.
Anyway, just wish him all the lucky. This article worried me, but he survived to so many bad things. He will do well in LA Galaxy and LA.
10:53 PM
I agree with a lot of what you say only I would put the blame partly at McClaren's door too Siniestro because I really think being unfairly axed from the England squad when he was still undoubtedly one of the best 22 players, I think it hit him really hard and contributed to the problems at RM and I think if he had felt still wanted by his country he would have stayed in Europe I think the impact of what McClaren did was huge and he must have his share of the blame in all of this. RM is hugely culpable too of course.
12:36 AM
i blame RM and that england coach as well for the move to LA.....true he got other options in europe but from my point of view that will have meant going to another foreign country and learning their language (eg. italian)-which would have led to PA'S claiming they had affairs with him
he wouldn have played for any premiership team apart from Manu, so it was easy to sign for Galaxy after some thinking
Tiette
10:48 AM
You're right, Anna.
Can't forget McClaren and his unfair decision of letting him out of the England squad.
It affected him and his perfomances on the pitch aswell. And it probably contributed a bit on his decision to go to US.
And Tiette, I agree with you aswell.
