Jet-set Beckhams!

David Beckham jets outPhotos of David Beckham and his family catching a private jet from an airport in the South of France are in the gallery.
With David Beckham about to join the LA Galaxy the press are beginning their detailed coverage. There is an article that takes US soccer's temperature ahead of David Beckham's pending arrival in the New York Times and another in the Washington Times. There is also a superficial piece on David Beckham that concerns itself more with his cars than his soccer skills in the LA Times. Still, although David Beckham is yet to kick a MLS ball he has already begun to well and truly deliver the profile and coverage the league hoped he would.

There is a story-board of a commercial that ESPN is going to run this week to promote David Beckham's LA Galaxy debut available online here. Thanks to the LA Riot Squad. I found the ad pretty questionable, what do you think?

He's keeping the beard... I wonder if he'll do the presentation with the Galaxy with the beard or if he's gonna shave it for the event.

Sorry but I didn't say he was flying to the US because I think they will be flying back to the UK for a few days before going on to the US - he'll be there pretty soon though in just a few days :)

That ad is kind of dumb. You'd think they could come up with something better. Crying girls and a father and son buying shirts yeah I gotta tune in for that? Is there gonna be a football oops I mean soccer game is he gonna play soccer it woulda been nice if they could have... I don't know squeezed a shot of him actually kicking a ball in there cos so much of the US stuff always leaves out the fact hes a really great player... seems a pity.

Thanks for the pics Anna :-)

That ad is so negative! Is the best thing about David Beckham coming to the US the fact some other fans had to say good bye to him? That's just whack. Lame.

i'm glad you thought so anna. i read the add, and did was not impressed. i don't get why we have to show people in madrid and england so heartbroken.

just focus on him coming to america, not how disappointed europe is. i have to admit, i'm hoping the at is not the final treatment.

I agree Julie. This line from the LA Times article linked here (from their the SPORTS section!) says it all to me: "...Who is this guy? Leaving soccer and Beckham's many accomplishments on the field with Manchester United, Real Madrid and in three World Cups with England out of it altogether..." Can you imagine? What else would a sports page leave IN? Apparently a description of a jet-setting life style chock full of inaccuracies and still certainly no different from that of most top pro athletes in US and Europe.

Part of it is the US sports press' inexcusable ignorance about football (of course its easier to leave the whole thing out than learn enough to write about it) and part of it is the old story that celebrity "news," true and otherwise, sells papers.

The ad is not much better...they are trying to make this look like the "Beatles coming to America." Which I personally think is the last thing needed to make the sport taken more seriously, as is the stated goal of bringing Becks over. But we can't forget that ESPN is a huge investor in MLS now, and they along with team, league and Beckham sponsors will be doing whatever they think will get their products (not necessarily always the sport itself) the widest attention.

On the other hand, there are lots of articles and MANY bloggers who are taking a more educated and positive approach, and I have to remind myself that these represent the base of supporters that will help make Becks' coming challenge a success to whatever degree possible.

for the person who will be on vacation in asia - asia is a big place and different countries and hotels in those countries may have different channels. All I can suggest if it's not on TV wherever you are is that you can subscribe to Chelsea TV for 4 quid and watch it online. Have a nice trip :)

I have to disagree with you Diane, the article is a puff piece but other than being disappointing in its depth it's a relatively harmless piece of fluff.

The Ad is an act of offensive insensitive stupidity unless of course my money really isn't welcome in America?

It's a global village thanks to the internet the world has never been so small. Becks is a global icon. Thanks to Youtube fans all over the world will see this spot. Is depicting the lad's fans in Spain & Europe as crying women flattering to Becks? As a great player he has fans of both gender.

Is it likely to make international fans...a huge and potentially financially lucrative source of revenue...feel warm and fuzzy? Could Spanish fans be offended could all international fans seeing this think it's a huge one finger salute to us?

Yes.

So it's not in David Beckham's best interests and it could do far more damage than the LA Times piece.

I don't normally post and I don't always agree with your comments syd but I gotta say considering the size of the total MLS fanbase (and yeah I know they are trying to grow it but still) it doesn't seem wise to thumb your nose and do the whole your loss our gain nah nah ne nah nah thing considering they just might want the losers to buy a few kits pay for a few tickets when they're visitng the US. I don't remember any really bad taste stuff like this when he went from the UK to Spain. Man o Man you know it aint great when the LA Galaxy is making Real Madrid look good!!!

It's not LA Galaxy's ad though it's ESPN's and we haven't actually seen the finished ad - as Tanique said there might have been some tweaks let's at least see it.

Your right we should wait to see it but LA Galaxy did have input into the concept.

actually fair dues I think they've changed it a fair bit. It's still a pretty crap ad but it's miles better than those storyboards showed.
