David Beckham debuts!

david beckham debut

Update - David Beckham debuted in the 78th minute of the tonight's friendly between LA Galaxy and Chelsea coming on as a substitute to replace Alan Gordon for the Galaxy. Chelsea won the game 1 - 0 You can read some of his post-match comments online here and also more about the night here.

There is an article in Sports Illustrated which suggests that David Beckham will not play again before July 31st or even August 5th. Get well soon Becks!

First of the photos are in the gallery. Thanks to Tanique33 for all her help.

You can read about the pre-game build-up and the list of celebs who attended online here.

Whether David Beckham will make a brief appearance as a substitute in tonight's friendly between LA Galaxy and Chelsea won't be known until game time. Jose Mourinho, Chelsea Manager, has advised the LA Galaxy to take a cautious approach with regards to Becks injury (source) as there has been speculation that he is being pressured to play (story here). I hope this isn't the case and comments from current coach Frank Yallop suggest that he certainly wants to see David Beckham's best interests respected.

Despite the "will he - won't he" speculation in the media, David Beckham continues to get on with the process of recovering from his injury and fitting in with his new team. New team-mate Kyle Martino said of Becks "He’s meshed with the team so well. He’s been in on every conversation, he’s outgoing, he’s humble. To be the icon that he is and still be able to be the human being that he is, is something that everyone respects inside the locker room." More here

ESPN will be airing the documentary David Beckham: New Beginnings tonight at 7pm ET so make sure you're set up to record it! You can read some of David Beckham's quotes from the show online here.

ESPN also has a nice article about David Beckham's early years as a player which includes a lot of quotes from one of his first coaches, Paul Mariner.

Finally, I've set up a new album in the gallery All the latest photos will be added to this one album to make it easier for people to check for new photos.

the pic of gaz, david and phil is classic. thanks for getting that one up.

i can't even get into the idea of him being pressured. if he plays hurt, i'll be supremely disappointed.

i'd hate to think money would take precedence over health. that said, i just don't see david going out there if he truly didn't think he'd be ok.

the timing of this all sux but I still think you have to start as you mean to go on and everyone, TV, fans, AEG whoever all have to learn the lesson that Becks can be injured you know and shit happens but if they start acting like hes gotta play 10 min or 15 min even when hes hurt when does that stop? when hes in a wheel chair? Be real people

he hasn't had 1 minutes training time with the team and hes new... he hasn't played in weeks... theres a ton of hype and expectations... and he didn't sound optimistic about his recovery in his interview thurs and we all know becks usually sounds optimistic even if hes half dead... all up if he plays it will be a massive mistake and I do think it will be money and not common sense at work. Also I will lose all respect for LA Galaxy if they play a player in a friendly who wan't fit enough to train.

If he plays, he'll be playing hurt. As I listened to his interview and then he couldn't train at all. Players do play hurt it happens Becks did play when carrying an injury for Real Madrid.

The big difference here is that this is an exhibition match and Becks was far more pessimistic about playing in his interview than the club is being. That sets of alarm bells for me because in many years of following David I can honestly say that he has often said hes fine and the club medical staff haven't cleared him to play. Pru is right when she says hes an optimist.

I think it's best if he doesn't play and I hope he won't. If the club asks him to go out there for 10 mins to please the sponsors David will play though, hes a very accommodating man and he'll feel bad about letting people down. If hes asked if hes put in that position... I have no doubt he'll oblige. If that happens I wish him the very best of luck!!

Thanks for that super cute Becks Nev Brothers pic. out of which bag/atic did you get that from ?;-)

Fingers crossed he won't get pressured to play.

IMO a half fit Becks won't do anybody a favour. Sorry for the ones with a ticket, but his health and the longterm thinking is much more important.

how much more will people be pissed, if an injury is aggravated, and he's out even longer? the idea that it's only 5 to 15 minutes doesn't hold when it only took a second for him to get injured in the first place. it took another split second to tweak it again in the madrid game.

ultimately it will be up to david, and i have to believe the club has his long term interests in mind. i also have to believe fans get it. if we know anything about david, it's he'd always prefer to be playing. so, if he doesn't, there has to be a real concern.

i hope people will respect that, if that is how it turns out.

We wish to see David to play because we do not know if in Italy we will only transmit other games of the Galaxy, but if its physical conditions are perfect, because it is absurd to force he to play risking the ankle (we would be much sad for he and we do not only think that the Galaxy the face for the fans but because there are monetary interests). If David will play we all it we will help with positive thoughts you. Hello Loredana Samuele, Gabriel

ok, that really was not the most enjoyable game i've ever seen. it's just not fun watching him play injured. but the people got what they wanted.

it was VERY nice to see and hear the reception he got. but hopefully he gets well, so i can actually enjoy watching him play.

i'm very happy that he played! but if he thought he wasnt ready i wouldnt blame him. im glad the people got to see David for the very 1st time as a LA Galaxy player. it wasnt his best game hence he played for 13+ minutes. but im proud of him. now im worried because of the tackle. hope he gets better! of course he'll always have us, Beckham Fans.

That's not nice to debut only because you were kind of forced to do it.

Hope the injury does not get worse.
It's really a weird feeling watching all this big coverage on his debut and LA Galaxy career.
And the paparazzi following his every step. Really weird.
Loads of famous people out there only to see his debut.
It will take time to get used (again).

Hope Becks can cope with all this.

And just to help a bit, *embarassed*, ESPN has new videos online:

About his debut, with interview, comments:

Interview with him (I think it is part of the documentary they aired earlier, not sure)

Ruud talking about his move to US (part of the documentary either, I think):

Hello to all! Its ankle as it goes? (than fear when it has been fallen to earth. We ch are fans that us, but we must be realistic and to convince itself that the MLS will want to earn to the maximum on the image of David, must think to recover well because with the great performances only can approach the Americans soccer. Good its companions at least this time have put the heart more could not make. David has touched little balls but she has noticed herself that he is a different soccer player of its companions. well I hoped he wouldn't play. I don't actually understand it at all. The lad says that he's not fit, he hasn't trained, so why did he play? It's not a football club it's the big top now. His ankle is sore and now he can't play for 1 or 2 weeks so is ok to disappoint the fans who have paid for tickets to matches that aren't televised and when big advertising dollars aren't involved? Well at least we know where we stand he doesn't play for a club any longer he has joined a business.

oh well at least he seems to have survived it none the worse for wear and it's done now which must be a certain amount of pressure off his shoulders!

Love the darling darling pics of Brooklyn with Suri so cute! :-)

at least the LA Galaxy played better Becks is in a different class but there were signs that David has something to work with and it was a huge improvement on the "pub-side" we saw on Tuesday they at least looked like a conference side this time!
