Becks set for 97th cap

becks set for cap 97

David Beckham is set to earn is 97th cap representing England in the friendly against Germany tomorrow night at Wembley. The Times reports that Steve McClaren, England Manager, has defended his decision to include an injured David Beckham in the team saying, "I don’t see how rest could have benefited him... He needs to play because he hasn’t had regular games in a long while and he needs matches to get over that ankle injury. It will be good for us to have him fitter in three weeks’ time, in the same way it will be better for Michael Owen." The Sun suggest that Becks will start and play 60 minutes but the starting-line-up won't be announced until closer to tomorrows 8pm kick-off time.

Clip of David Beckham @ training

Here is a clip of David Beckham at yesterday's England training session. I have also added a segment from Sky news that discusses David Beckham's hectic playing schedule.

(Source) England Manager, Steve McClaren, has told a press conference today that, David Beckham "looked very, very good" in training this morning. He also said when asked about David Beckham making the trip form the US for the friendly, "we are delighted in his attitude in wanting to do that and wanting to play for England." You can watch Steve McClaren's press conference and his comments on David Beckham online here. Most media articles don't seem to be representing the context of what was said accurately and so it is worth actually watching the clip for yourself.

England Captain, John Terry backed Becks to deal with playing in the US and also for England saying, "I've spoken to him [Beckham] and he's fine... he's a great professional. He's getting his sleep in and he will deal with it in his own way."

Skysports reports that team-mate Peter Crouch paid tribute to Becks in a recent interview with Zoo magazine saying, "He's still probably the best player in the the world at crossing the ball. For me personally, it's fantastic to get into the box and if I find a bit of space, invariably he will find my head. When he gets half a yard, we know when and how he's going to try and cross it and that's why myself, Michael (Owen) or the other strikers are able to get into the box and benefit from it."

"I want him to carry on playing for England. If he keeps on playing like he did against Estonia and keeps on creating goals for me, I'm all for it."

Becks has added a new entry to his blog you can read it here.

hmmmm well very very good is relative I guess but I find it strange that McClaren would say that considering David couldn't even take part in training yesterday and didn't play in the squad game or do any ball work. I can't help but wonder if he doesn't want to admit now David has flown all this way that he really shouldn't have...

good to hear he looked good in training. he trained yesterday, it was just a lighter one i thought. nice words from crouch.

i'm really excited for the game, despite the fact that it comes on so late here.

Sorry I should have said didn't take part in team training. He did train you're right. He came out for the warm up and stretched and did some light jogging and then when the team finished warming up he left and went off to the gymn and then he came out at the end and they had a warm down and signed autographs. I didn't get one because there was a lot of people!

Hilarious, Marie, that about sums up my own look on the bright side.

We sure can worry, watching out for this one...the little Guardian Angel will be exhausted by mid-September. Hopes and wishes, as always, that she gets her work done!

If you watch the press conference on skysports when McClaren says he looks very very good he was actually responding to a reporter going on about whether or not Becks could handle the travel and play so I almost think that comment was McClaren saying he didn't seem jet-lagged rather than a comment on his injury status and although there are a steady stream of headlines pouring out now saying everything from Becks will feature through to Becks will be in the starting line-up, McClaren actually never gave any direct comment where he said Becks would play. That said I do think Becks will play but I admit personally the less time on the field he sees the happier I'll be. I'd be happy for him to get his 97th cap and see about 10 minutes of action! I've said it before and you may all be bored with me saying it lol but until I see him able to train properly and looking healthy and pain-free I don't want him pushing it.

All I can say is AWWW LOL he got on the wrong side of the car. That was just too cute. But my goodness, his schedule is insane. I wouldn't be able to stay up or manage my time zones with that.

Never bored with you saying that, Anna, didn't want to seem less of an England or Becks supporter in continuing to suggest that the ankle isn't ready myself, but your credentials are impeccable! I see what you mean about McClaren referring to jet-lag and I think he's right.

Becks has always claimed he doesn't need much sleep, but if people are worried that the time zones will make a difference--any parent of three little ones knows that he's probably been on a 24 hour clock for 9 years now and well practiced at catching sleep whenever he can. Not the first time being a dad will help him at work!

The ankle? Every time I hear McC say "he's here based on performance, he'll come back based on performance, performance etc etc" it gives me the creeps and I think, well why aren't you making sure that he's fit enough to perform then? I've already burdened Anna with my over-active imagination, and hope they're all just psyched for the big game and Becks enjoying being back where he belongs.

But someone tell me what the a reasonable starting line-up would be if they do manage to be sensible about the # of minutes Becks plays...and I'll try to set the other worries aside.

Thanks!

Thanks for the Videos nice to hear the kids talking awwww so cute!

I have given up even thinking about his injury. I wish he would just stop for a couple of weeks go home, stay home and come back when its not swollen and that's that but its not going to happen and I think this could all drag on for another 2 and a half months :-((((

we won't get tired of you saying it anna, because so many of us feel the same way. im not sure anyone wants to see him play at anything less than 100%. so, dont worry. i won't truly enjoy the games unti l i know he is well.

him getting in on the wrong side of the car is priceless.

Car entry was hilarious and so human! As long as he knows which net he's going for...

Read the McClaren quote, so I guess he has a medical degree now? If he hadn't been so vile this year, and I just remembered him from when he assisted at ManU and England, I would have trusted that he actually believes TORN ligaments need playing on...but...now we will just have to hold our breath.

I think he will be ok (fingers and everything else crossed) but I don't think he will be able to play against Chivas and some of the Galaxy fans will be disappointed not to have him for their derby but I just think he's going to hit a wall no matter how willing the spirit - the body is just flesh and blood and will only cope with so much. Oh well time will tell.

yeah, i said to someone the other day i can't imagine him playing on thursday, and if he does i can't imagine it would be a significant amount of time.

if negative press follows, oh well. he is ony one man.

i guess compared to the other players, Beckham has the lesser injury, the team is the team of walking wounded nowadays, hope they all heal in time for the qualifiers...sigh, I just hope he'll leave the game unscathed.

Thanks for the videos.
You're right Anna. Let's see if his body will handle with the schedule.

Hopefully there won't be serious problems.

As much as I love seeing him playing for England...I wish he only plays one half of the game.
A full game would be too much.

Good luck to David at the game today.

Hello to all! We do not know if to have understood the comments well, but we only hope that David you play alone if not to have damage to the ankle. We hope that the Galaxy instead to leave he to rest (also the other players engages to you in the match international) because the human body has need of rest. As far as the fans if they are truly fans they would have to be augured that he rests, and if have already bought the ticket must learn that the square goes always above all supported when in the square comes to lack an important player, does not have to expect the impossible . Finger cross. United all for David.Loredana, Samuele, Gabriel.

I think if anyone could do the impossible it's Becks and I think he could handle the schedule if he weren't injured anyway fingers crossed. It's so long since anybody gave out any clear or solid info on the ankle it is hard to judge how good bad or ugly the injury is at this stage. So now I'm gonna cop out with I don't know" because I don't :)
