David Beckham out injured

hello new england

The first of the photos of David Beckham watching LA Galaxy lose 1-0 to the New England Revolution are in the gallery. Thanks To Tanique33.

(Source) David Beckham missed the match against the New England Revolution due to injury. He told reporters, "I'm always disappointed when I can't play but I'm working hard so I'll be able to play again soon."

(Source) David Beckham was booed at the game by sections of the sell-out crowd when they realised he would not play. Becks is receiving criticism for not playing with some suggesting that disappointed fans are more "sore than his ankle". He is also receiving criticism for playing from the english press, whose priority is the Euro qualifiers, and others who think he should refuse until he is fully recovered. The criticism is off-target though as there is no one more frustrated by the situation than David Beckham himself.

At the end of tonight's game David Beckham signed autographs, a 10-year-old girl was left crying as fans behind her pushed to get Becks signature. But she was beaming when Becks reached over the wall and handed her his warmup top on his way back to the locker room.

In the middle of a very difficult and unfortunately lengthy injury period, I hope people will not lose sight of the fact that this is a good man, with a good heart, doing his best.

LA Galaxy coach Frank Yallop told reporters when asked about David Beckham's injury status "It just didn't feel right... He didn't want to risk it, so we decided not to." He also said, "David wants to be on the field... I think he feels very bad. It's a disappointment, but it's a reality. I do feel for the fans because they're excited to see him play and so are we as a team." The official match report is online here. You can also see a tiny clip from ESPN of David Beckham at the game below and a longer clip of Becks signing autographs for fans online here.

The LA Galaxy next play the Super liga semi-final against DC United at home on Weds. Aug 15th. Coach Yallop said, "We are hoping (that) having a day off will make his [David Beckham's] ankle better for Wednesday. He feels better walking around on it, but it is sore... We are flying again tonight and hopefully by Tuesday morning he will feel a lot better."

However team-mate Edson Buddle had a less optimistic view saying, "It is not looking too good... I see him [David Beckham] every day in the training room and it is going to take some time for him to recover. He is good at hiding the pain and he is not one to show he is struggling. He will keep pushing himself."

Landon Donovan has spoken highly of Becks the player but comments such as, "We have a guy [Beckham] who counts $400,000 against the cap and who's a great player... We've played 15 matches and had him for half an hour," are loaded with pressure.

Last week the LA Lakers Kobe Bryant appeared on Jimmy Kimmel's late night show. I missed it I think I was doing my best imitation of the living dead at the time. Here's what went down -
Bryant said he was excited about Beckham joining the Galaxy. "A lot of people are missing out on the beauty of the game of soccer.... And I think him coming here is going to add to the excitement. People are going to start paying attention . . ."

Kimmel: "If he ever plays."

Bryant: "He's got to get healthy, man. He's got to get healthy. I feel bad for him, because there's been so much hype about him coming here."

Bryant said he is eager for Beckham's injury to heal. "I've watched him for many years and to be able to see him up close -- he's brilliant at what he does."
Kobe understands, let's hope that other people can too! Thanks for the heads up Diane!

England friendly news

The BBC reports that Steve McClaren, England manager, may invite David Beckham to join up with the England squad ahead of the friendly against Germany later this month, even if he is unable to play. David Beckham said "He [Steve McClaren] said he is looking forward to me coming over, even if I can't play. It is important that all the players are together... It is good to get together as a team, so hopefully I can be there but I have to be fit physically and mentally to play for my country and I have to play for the Galaxy first."

It's a nice gesture from McClaren to invite him, even if he is not able to play.

But we cannot forget that what made his injury gets worse was the flight between England and USA. :-/

Plus, I don't think LA Galaxy will accept that. Not sure. Especially if he is still injured.

And I'm very disappointed with LA Galaxy. I just really hope they can learn from this situation.

He shouldn't have travelled with the team if he's not 100% fit and if the injury gets worse with all the flights.

Becks is really amazing. He only played because of the demand.
He isn't fit.
He needs at least 10 days without playing like he said.

People need to have patience. And it seems lots of people don't have and I really don't understand it.

Hopefully this situation will be over as soon as possible.

It's so frustating seeing Becks frustated. :-(

good on him for not playing it has got to be tough on the lad sitting there knowing a stadium filled with people wish you were playing but he put it to the test Thursday and it clearly hasn't responded well so he best not risk it further. Wise choice.

He had better not go to England until he is fit.

He signed a contract with the Galaxy and arrived to the team injured. For all the blame they get, he wouldn't be helping the situation by leaving for a friendly.

I agree with you Syd it's good he didn't play but it must be so tough for him.

I agree Siniestrototal it is good if McClaren invites him and I'm glad that he is part of his thinking as he should be!

Yes he has a contract with the Galaxy, he has had a contract with all the clubs he has played for. The fact he arrived injured is irrelevant. He is going to be with the LA Galaxy for 5 years he will unfortunately probably be injured again at some point. The relevant point is that he is injured now and unlikely to be fit in time for Aug 22nd.

The article does not say he is going to go or anything definite perhaps the more excitable and over-emotional need to take a deep breath?

he has said, he has to play for the galaxy before thinking about england. so technically, if he plays in the NY game, he will have done that. that would be interesting if he went, just to sit. i can see the articles now.

i'm glad he didn't play yesterday, and i too hope that speeds the recovery up.

I hope he joins up with England. Sure the media here will go on and on and he won't be helping the situation but right now he is really doing his best, playing when he's borderline pushing himself hard even though hes struggling and what does he get in return?

On the official MLS site the latest news item on the LA Galaxy loss starts "Another night without David Beckham led to another loss for the Los Angeles Galaxy". Un-freaking-believable. Apart from the pressure isn't it nuts to believe that one player is the difference between winning and losing. I mean I watched the game and Galaxy royally sucked. They were awful. Becks can make a difference but the whole team has to take responsibility for results and he is going to need something to work with and they played like a whole lot of nothing. It was freaking depressing =(

positive thoughts that Beckham's injury would heal...and another blow for England, Rooney's out as well together with John Terry---sigh...and seeing how the Europeans handle all these injuries is in stark contrast on how LA handle Beckham's. Anyway, enough negativity---positive thoughts that Beckham would be able to play as a 100% fit player for Galaxy.

Glad Kobe weighed in, Anna, nice from another athlete...and very happy you are recovered!

Marie, you are right about moving on to positive thoughts, but I have to veer the other way on a couple of points before making the attempt:

1) Donovan is an ass. He has been known as a brat and whiner for years and even though he claims to have matured too many of his statements don't live up to that. He is also a poor captain in my eyes...where was he on the pitch when one of his players was injured last night (we looked)? The little innuendos about Becks are just more proof that he does not support his teammates...very poor form unfortunately.

2) Yallop: "We are hoping (that) having a day off will make his [David Beckham's] ankle better for Wednesday..."
Will it NEVER end, are they daft!!!!? Clearly unhinged, I can't explain it any other way. Yes, huge contrast with Europe, Marie, and probably with how things are handled in most professional sports -- by both management and fans.

3) Thank goodness for Edson Buddle!

4) SUCH a sweet story about the little girl and the warmup top, I almost joined her with a tear while reading!!!

Becks has his world is round philosophy, so I'm hoping for it to turn in a more positive direction for him sooner rather than later. Maybe a backlash against the ridiculous scapegoating? Just a hope...and my move toward focusing on positive thoughts again.

thanks for the kobe bit. Landon, has commented on the perks of david being there too. these comments read a little off-kilter to me. i don't know landon that well, but he has certainly raised my eyebrows with a couple of comments.

i agree, it certainly seems like pressure coming from him. i'd much prefer to see less talk of becks money, and much more talk on how he and the rest of the team can perform better on the pitch.

no words for yallop. yes, perhaps the whole day off will heal his ankle.

that's so kind what he did for that girl!
as for the criticism, it's absurd and unfair. no point in elaborating further.

Beckham signed a five year contract with the Galaxy so you would have to know if there is a buyout clause (along with it's $ value). Whatever the details, he and the Galaxy would both have to agree to his transfer as well as the financial terms offered by whatever team he would move to.

More importantly, Becks has said that he would not be doing this, that he has taken on a challenge-- not only playing for the Galaxy and MLS, but working with kids in the U.S. to help build soccer long-term--that he made the commitment and he was happy about his family's move to the States as well. Hopefully he has more patience and fortitude to weather this period of most foolish criticism than I do!!

I have just made a vow to stop reading anything negative. Nothing new to find there, and besides, who knows what was originally said and what the quotes are being turned into. For example, my opinions of Donovan aside, the press would be most ecstatic to find a "story" in tension between him and Becks and words are easily twisted.

what I find funny about Donovan, is he talks about money and how the lesser known players might resent Beckham, when in fact those players are the ones who are really in support of Beckham, You're right Diane, Edson Buddle's comments shows how Beckham is trying and the management should figure out that they are hurting him.

everyone should relax.

people in england have booed him before.
people in spain have booed him before.
people in the U.S. have booed him before.

it's just sports, and the loudest critics get the most attention as always. it's not indicative of the way the majority feel.

he'll be back soon, doing well for the Galaxy and England, and this current period will be yesterday's news.

I think you need to relax

No one has said he hasn't been booed before or criticized before or that it is coming from the majority.

There are only 2 or 3 comments about this and they all just say it's a shame or absurd and it is.

Take a chill pill and try to respect other peoples right to their own feelings. As a David Beckham fan I have always felt bad for him when he has been booed or criticized now and in the past.

Many fans feel that way and they are allowed.

No one is saying this won't pass but are you suggesting that it should be completely ignored that we should pretend it's not happening? I don't see why?
