David Beckham Post-match comments
"It was nice to get the early goal. But tonight was not just about my goal and Landon's goal. I think it was a team performance that was exceptional. We worked hard as a team and played hard as a team and we won as a team.
"I've always said that everybody has to be patient.. I had to let nature take its course with my ankle. It's an injury and there wasn't much I could do about that... I was happy to be out there with the team and happy to be playing again so we're very happy tonight."
It is something [free kicks] I have always practiced a lot during my career, but I haven't been able to take any for eight weeks because of how my ankle has been... As soon as the free kick was given, I don't want to sound too confident but I felt I was going to score as soon as I had the ball in my arms," said Beckham. "Sometimes you feel like that, sometimes you don't get any feeling. Tonight I had the feeling that I was going to score. As soon as I hit it I knew that I had kicked it well
"I didn't expect to last an hour but it felt great after 10 minutes into the game... My confidence got up with my ankle and I was happy to be out there for 60 minutes. Overall, the ankle was a lot better than I thought it was going to be and I felt confident going into tackles. I went into one tackle tonight, which obviously I received a yellow card for... I need to thank the ref for not giving me a red card."
Landon Donovan on Becks contribution - "His ability to see things, he's got a play in mind always before the ball gets to him... He makes good decisions on the ball. You don't see that on TV, but here when he's under pressure and he gets into tight areas he makes the right pass more often than not and gets the ball into dangerous positions. I was really impressed by that."
"If this was him at who knows what percent of himself, I can't wait until he's fully healthy... I thought our attitude was great and I think David in there brought a lot out of a lot of guys."
On Becks goal - "It was something special... We all watch it on TV and you're like 'it can't be that good.' When I turned around I went 'Holy Jesus, are you kidding me?' Unbelievable."
On handing over the captaincy - Donovan revealed he offered the captaincy to Beckham during an earnest parking-lot conversation after the team's practice Tuesday and said, "I'm not stupid and I'm not naive... I know he's been captain of England, one of the best teams in the world. I'm going to play the same whether I'm wearing the captain's arm band or not... It made him an immediate part of the team. . . . I think guys looked at him different and he could say things differently. He was a great leader, and I think he's going to help us."
David Beckham said I'm very honored that Donovan felt the need to give me the armband and that he felt it would lift the team.
Frank Yallop on Becks - "We've all been waiting for that free kick. It was good to see him on the field in the jersey and start the game. We feel he's part of us now that he's played... To get a goal to cap it off, it's a dream start for (Beckham). I'm very excited for him."

that assist to Donovan? Man, it was beyond brilliant. Becks has once again proved his ability to "see" things in space of just seconds!
Aggh! I love this man!

Thanks for all the news, pictures and video Anna dear. I love how happy Brooklyn was when his Daddy scored and I loved Becks laughing in the video when the man says it's his first yellow card :-)
4:33 AM
how come he is captain is that like some 1 off or for like evry game?
4:37 AM
well done David!! Thank you for always doing England proud! someone has too =)
4:54 AM
From what Donovan said it sounds like he has handed over the captaincy to Becks from now on. Judging by how he played and the two combined I think everybody is happy and it's all working well so good on Donovan for stepping up and making the decision that he thought was best for the team. Becks is a great captain.

I got the feeling the captaincy was just a one time thing? I'm not sure mind. It's just so great to have all the media talking about him how great he is! And he is :0)

I love the story in the ESPN article about things Beckham says to push his teammates during the match...made me picture what he's like when he's working with kids :-) !
One important thing we all knew, and is now becoming more visible to newcomers, is exactly how much of a team player and booster he is...it wouldn't matter where he was playing, its always we (in good times and bad), always hopeful, always looking ahead.
Great collection of highlights and clippings! Thanks as always.
11:32 AM

Hey RPM -
I'm trying to contact you for a David Beckham-centered assignment. What's the best way to reach you? I can be e-mailed at katboniello@yahoo.com
2:05 PM
Hi Kat I'll e-mail you.
Diane and Melissa make sure you watch the Beckham report it has some more of the press conference and has the part where landon talks about how Becks calls who's ball it is etc.
I hope the complete press session will be online I'll post it if i find it. :)

I think it's a good idea making him captain. It's really sensible and good on Landon Donovan a class move. The press were always going to make far more fuss of Becks and the lad was always going to be treated as the teams leader so rather than clash egos like a certain spaniard I could mention hes had the sense to support and embrace the change and make it work for him and the team. Whatever people want to say about the level of play and whatever else I would say at this point at the Galaxy the lad has to be a whole heloo of a lot happier than at the same point in Madrid. As he has a supportive dressing room and it took him years to get that in Spain. No offence to the Madridistas.
Nice goal, assist and start too and perhaps the ankle is further along? I think maybe the lad has been wiser than I gave him credit for it might be his anle is healing but he isn't prepeared to play with it while hes coming back on the plastic crap... synthetic turf and who can blame him Smart lad!
3:47 PM
thanks rpm and i did find that press conference on the beckham report on mlsnet.
5:35 PM
Thanks Anna, I like the extra video bits on the Report, and can't get enough of those quotes from Donovan! He's got himself a new fan :-) . Don't have to say how classy Becks always is when talking about his teams...
My big news is that we are going to the match at Red Bulls on Saturday night--I hadn't said anything before because I didn't want to start hoping that we'd see Becks, just in case his ankle needed the rest. But I'm starting to believe it's possible now and we 're all getting really excited. At least after last night, I feel a bit more like the Galaxy is his team and can enjoy pulling for them no matter how long Becks manages the turf! (I am still trying to remain calm however :-)))))))))))) )
8:13 PM
captaining for England, he surely had the experience, in Madrid that first season he was the one that carried the whole team, Hope this is the start of many more great games to come...he surely organized the team and made them play better, the goal keeper also had some great saves. :)

Anna, I almost asked if anyone knew who Becks stopped and signed his jersey for after the match (it looked like he was planning to) but thought I might be starting to get a little TOO far into the details. Turns out it was something meaningful!
In case the link doesn't work--I'm sure you'll see it anyway--it's in the LA Times, "Beckham scores even bigger with gift"
Thanks for all the good news.

now Gerrard would not be playing, and the injury list just continues on for England, and knowing Beckham he would want to step up, because the team is depleted. I hope the ankle would hold up though.

Thanks for the video, Anna and Notourious.
Maybe it is just me, but his accent is very american. Really weird.
Anyway, it's nice to see all the happiness again.
And the Los Angeles Galaxy lads are really a bunch of nice guys.
Great Donovan, reconigzing how Becks is important to lead the team.
Always liked Donovan, now I like him more than ever.
But the hot ones are Steve Cronin and Kyle Martino. :-DDDDDDDDDDDD
Great assist, great goal!!! Go Becks, Gooooooooooooooooo!!!!
I'm wondering if LA Galaxy fans will start singing songs for Becks...
LOL...I have one:
