David Beckham’s Foxboro Presser

You can watch an excerpt from the presser online here.
You can also watch a clip of David Beckham with fans as he leaves the Cheesecake factory in Boston and a clip of Becks at practice online here. Thanks to the fan who shared the links.
Photos of David Beckham leaving DC and training at the Gillette stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts before participating in a brief press conference are in the gallery. I have also added a few more photos from David Beckham’s MLS debut.
David Beckham told the gathered reporters, “I’m not sure (about playing) at this moment, because my ankle flared up after the game (Thursday), and it swelled up a bit from flying… So we’ll have to see where it is. It was fine running (today), but that’s all that I really tried out on the field. I hope I can play some minutes, but I’m not 100 percent sure that I will. So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens (tomorrow).” You can read more of his comments online here.
At one point during the presser, Becks says that if he doesn’t play, “it’s for a good reason it’s not just because I’m being soft.” It is very sad that a player of his stature and ability is even having to make such a statement and defend himself in this way. Anyone with any knowledge of David Beckham and his career knows that his work ethic is second to none and the fact that he has been playing, though visibly limping, to appease various groups is a very sad moment in sport. ESPN has a good article regarding David Beckham’s injury from earlier in the week that is still relevant, read it here.
Finally, you can read a nice story about The David and Victoria Beckham childrens charity helping a little 4 year old girl, online here.

you're welcome and i hope you are feeling better. i really don't want to sound harsh, and obviously i agree anyone who knows david, knows about his work ethic. but, i'm no longer getting the reasoning. not being 100 percent, is exactly why he shouldn't keep playing. sit 2 games out and be 100 percent? or play a game, hurt the ankle, then sit a game because you've aggravated the ankle? he needs to heal and go from there. this is beyond silly at this point. if there is a chance that the ankly is still so shaky that it will become inflamed after a game, why take it? the fans will be ok.

PS, anna, i agree with you completely. the saddest part of this whole thing, is risking further injury to appease fans. it is a very sad moment in sports. and it very much looks like, the team has left it all up to david, again.

The headline on the official MLS site? "Ankle sore, Beckham unsure for Revs" Yeppers they're really backing him up and helping him out with the situation. The MLS and LA Galaxy are the people who have made him seem soft because they never speak of his injury in any medical terms that tell people "hey this is serious and it needs time" Oh and people who want him to play injured are not fans. They are people who bought tickets to jump on the latest bandwagon rolling by but they aint fans.

Hey thanks for that they also have a clip of him at training and part of the press conference so I'll put those both up. Thank you

I hope he doesn't play because from what I've heard the artificial turf will be harder on the ankle. Now he's had his Galaxy Debut and his MLS debut he needs to focus on a recovery plan. Take care of you David

grrr, my frustration with the LA Galaxy management, is exceeding day by day, Beckham has committed to them, what about their commitment to Beckham, I mean Beckham has already paid for himself with the endorsements and the publicity that he brought in the team and the league—how about a little support from his own management—the manager or the team doctors should speak, not the player—sorry for the rant
but it is so frustrating i don't know if we are just spoiled by the European Leagues and other American Sports but the MLS really should step up with their injury reports like they do with American Football and Baseball.Marie

It's such a shame this has happened now. He's in an environment where the fans don't know him so well and trying to prove himself and get things off to the right start but the injury just isn't co-operating and the pressure and frustration are combining to make the lad push himself further faster than he should. He needs people around him now to give him some good advice but I'm not sure he has it. It's clear with comments the lad is making about being thought soft, or disappointing people, and he even mentioned the pressure… that he is in the frying pan a bit but he has to hang tough and not make the injury worse because then it's out of the frying pan into the fire. The trouble is as I've said before I've been a high school level coach and I've seen youngsters with nothing but love of the team… and Becks the good lad that he is has plenty of that…stay on the field injured and beg me to start them with broken collar bones and ribs! I always have to tell them not to be so daft! I hope he doesn't play and that someone is there to be the voice of reason! We all need good advice some times.

thanks for the cheesecake factory link.

They don't speak of his injury in "medical terms" because there is no structural damage! all they can do is let it heal naturally…sometimes it swells, sometimes it doesn't. Have any of you ever had an ankle injury? The only person who can judge the toleration at this point is Becks himself. Let's all hope HE makes the right choices. And remember, he signed a contract not only to be a player, but an "ambassador" to MLS (his words.) He can't hide and heal like an ordinary player because he chose to become, essentially, the face of the league. He must have these press conferences to help promotion. He agreed to be more than a player. As they say, you live by the sword and you must die by the sword. And besides, all of this will be forgotten in a month when he is healed and winning again!

I appreciate the posts that express my own frustration and sadness (ok and anger) in this situation. "A sad day in sports" says it all. I am having a really hard time trying to mirror Becks' usual graciousness and optimism. His treatment by Galaxy and MLS management is as described here, but I am beginning to consider all of MLS complicit. SOMEONE in there must be interested in the athlete as well as the next advertising or gate dollar. I would love to see that person or team come out and say: don't bring him, don't put his ankle on the plane, don't have him on the bench to be photographed, get him attended to and bring him back to play.In all my years of watching football around the world, we have seen situations (including others involving Becks) where players have been brought back too soon after an injury. But I could never have imagined such flagrant disregard for the impact on a players' season or career as I am seeing now. And the obvious attempt to make Becks alone take the heat for the condition of his ankle, for when and where he plays and it's repercussions is beyond the pale.I have just repeated what Marie and Anna said, but I am quite sad this weekend–fearing that Becks is in the hands of people who actually don't care whether they only get these last two run-outs out of him and then have him do press conferences the rest of the season now the tickets are all sold and the papers abuzz.Forgive me if I have sunk to the depths of cynicism. And I so very much hope that I am wrong about the potential aggravation to his injury this last road trip may have caused. Syd said some time ago that he should not have been taken on it and I couldn't agree more–given the choice, I'm not sure his competitive nature could have kept him on the bench much longer in DC…it shouldn't have been an option.I am now going off to practice my grace and optimism

Hello to all! It is truly scandalous and offensive that one sport comes hurt therefore. They have mistaken to make to play he against the Chelsea. To we sorry to say but in the USA they are not therefore sportswomen like we believed! They are not true fans. Little serious the Galaxy from Lalas in then. Ciao Loredana, Samuele, Gabriel.

WE are happy for the little girl helped from David and its wife. It makes it appeal to to read positive things on their family (unfortunately not always is therefore). We augur to David one fast recovery. We hope that he today you do not play if it is not to 100%. Ciao Loredana Samuele, Gabriel.

Whoever said you can't talk of his injury in medical terms because there is no structural damage, I'm sorry but that's a really silly thing to say every injury can be talked about in medical terms in that it can be accurately medically dscribed – he has a sprained ankle with torn ligaments and whatsmore sprained ankles can be 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree sprains and an injury report could say be issued saying which but it hasn't been. I only put a comment this ignorant on the site because it lets me explain to anyone equally confused that of course it is possible to discuss the injury in medical terms and not just use the vague (unnecessarily so) term "sore". Also to say the club has no duty of care and that he shouldn't expect professional treatment because he is an ambassador is misguided. Of course he can do interviews and press conferences and photo opps while he heals but certain calls regarding his travelling and being on the active roster that should be being made by the Manager and team medics should not be influenced by whether he is the ambassador. Of course he still has the right to heal like any player, he is an ambassador for the sport and he has clearly already succeeded in the role increasing the profile and bringing attention however as amabassador he is still a human being and he is injured and it must be managed plain and simple.

rpm…the first time anyone you posts a comment that is objective and not the usual "rah rah Becks" or "thanks for the "pics" comment and look what happens.of course, you posted the "medical" comment so that you could call it ignorant and then use it to bash. go ahead, but there were some good points made regarding Beckham's own decisions and was not negative or disrespectful. since you choose to call out people for "ignorance," i challenge you to start posting more objective comments like that which might open up some good discussions with your readers. we're on the site because we like beckham, but some of his decisions can be discussed like anyone else's. maybe one person can provide a different point of view (gasp) once in a while.but what does it matter? you won't post this anyway.

ditto to what Anna said plus they could tell us what ligaments are injured.David doesn't deserve worse treatment for being an ambassador how stupid he is helping the profile of the sport in a way that no other player whos less known could do and you seem to think he deserves to suffer for it. Moronic. If anything they should look after him better.I've had an ankle injury and the doctors could tell me how I'm doing and I told them things. David said he couldn't cut and he said he needed 7 – 10 days and then the club said something completely different they said… we'll see… and the media quoted Yallop and Lalas and kept saying Becks might play in DC after David said what he did in Toronto why was that?

I'm sorry if my comment seemed to "bash" anyone. I really don't want to make anyone feel like that. It's just a fact, sorry, not an opinion that the injury can be described medically and I wanted anyone ignorant of that fact to know that. I didn't think the word misguided was very strong and although your comment is basically a personal attack on me you are hiding conveniently behind anonymous. I think a lot of the comments in this thread are quite thoughtful and go beyond "rah rah" so just how objective you are being is debateable but I will put your comment out here and I know because I see IP addresses who wrote it so let's see if you are prepared to post under your name and own your objectivity
Your comment hun was not that objective, it was factually incorrect and very much an opinion and whilst you are entitled to an opinion let's be clear I don't run this site as an open forum for everyone's opinion this site is here to be the David Beckham cheer squad. There are literally hundred of sites and hard copy publications full of criticism of David Beckham, undoubtedly they all believe they are very objective but this is the site where the clear objective is to support him – great player, good man, human, capable of making mistakes but ultimately seldom deserving of a tenth of the criticism he gets – this sites objective is to be the counter balance. Please list all the sites where David Beckham is supported where his side of the story is truly told. It won't be a long list. I make no apologies for this site.

Hang on. Please keep in mind that we are all guests here–guests who benefit from an enormously time-consuming amount of work done by our hostess in research, fact-checking, media compilation and [I'm not technical so I don't know what all of the web-design and set-up is called] to provide us with the fairly comprehensive coverage we find here. And that is before she has time to turn her attention to our comments. There is no law that says this blog must allow comments at all–it is not a forum. The opportunity is just one more hospitality that we enjoy. BTW, as someone who has made them, I can attest to the fact that Anna/rpm does post dissenting comments. You may notice, however, that they do not vent frustrations on other individuals here, either hosts or visitors to the site. This is not a commercial enterprise, and most of her visitors hope Anna (and her new helpers) get some enjoyment from working on it. I very much hope that our hostess leaves out whatever comments save her from spending time and energy (where would she find more anyway) moderating debates between her guests.

Anna has nothing to apologize for and neither does Becks. He has a fairly scrupulous work ethic and will do more than he was contracted for–both on the pitch and as a spokesperson. We have seen him in both roles often enough. In return he should be treated as any professional should expect. As an athlete, medical treatment and fitness come first. If flying exacerbates his injury, he would have to be a spokesperson in one place until it heals. Immediate gratification of all expectations may be considered a modern day entitlement, but its probably not exactly how Becks' contract reads.Maybe its time to bring the mini cheerleaders back to help with the healing wishes
, they did a hell of a job…
(Quote)
wow where does this ego get off… what a twat… 'the first time anyone posts an objective comment'… cos no one else ever has. Ah I needed a good laugh. Anna ignore this none too bright individual you didn't bash you just corrected their inaccuracy and the fact they think there has to be structural damage before an injury can be medically assessed, an injury report issued and medical terms used well that is beyond ignorant. It's actually sad… about as bad a case of a little knowledge is dangerous as I've seen.

soooo he lives by the sword and must die by the sword … not negative? okaaaaay.Whoever suggested he has would or needs to hide?seriusly does sound real negative its only in ur planet its objetive
(Quote)
I commented before I saw the new comment from Mr or Ms Objective. What does this comment mean?He can't hide and heal like an ordinary player he can't? why not? So because he is 100 x more famous than anyone else playing MLS and because he can fill stadiums when the teams usually can't then he can't heal like an ordinary player? You claim to be objective. Objectively you don't even make sense. Your comments are completely absurd. For the record he didn't sign a contract as an ambassador he signed a contract as a player for LA Galaxy but you don't see Cobi Jones who is out injured being treated like this. The fact that in addition to being a player he is an ambassador refers purely to the fact that it is his fame and profile that is expected to attract people to the sport and help take it to the next level. It's not a contracted position that means he isn't entitled to heal. You really need to know what you are talking about before you sound off about how objective your comment is. It's very hard to sound objective when you sound like a fool. Please Anna if these are the sort of comments you usually toss out keep it up!
(Quote)
oh dear. I don't want to really add to this unpleasantness. I don't want to bash or upset but everything written in the comment you believe not to be negative or disrespectful is wrong.1. His injury can be discussed in medical terms 2. He is not contracted as an ambassador and although he is very much an ambassador and a role model that has no bearing on how his injury should be managed. 3. I don't know where anyone on this site or in the media has suggested he shouldn't do press conferences full stop? 4. How is he living by the sword? He agreed to be more than a player? He has been more than a player for almost a decade but other clubs have still managed him as a player in a professional way and taken responsibility for their part in deciding if he plays and dealing with injury. You say let's hope HE makes the right choices. This is the saddest part of what you wrote because David is being criticised for not playing, people are saying he's soft, he should play through the pain, the club say all he has is a sore ankle. He is under a lot of pressure from franchises who upped ticket prices or made people buy packages, ESPN wants their pound of flesh and then you say you hope HE alone makes the right decisions so in other words he gets stick if he does play and he gets it if he doesn't? He can't win can he.I'm in the cheer squad. I'm here to support him with Anna because I think it's unfair to put it all on him. You are doing just what the club is doing. You are saying it is his decision when I think a number of people should be involved and that at the very very least it should not be presented to the media as his decision. You will find if you follow football in Europe that European clubs do not manage injured players in this way. Having seen both approaches now I think the European approach of saying these decisions are club decisions is fairer. Players can and do have input but players are not doctors and they can't be given sole responsibility.I think if you feel your comments have so much to offer the world perhaps start your own website?I will keep coming to this one.
