David Beckham: Captain America

Here's the full Interview with David Beckham in the Observer Sports Monthly that The Guardian previewed two days ago. Read it here.
Steve Davis at ESPN has written an interesting article on the perils of the MLS 'Beckham-centric' marketing approach, story here. Make sure you ignore the inaccurate sidebars. I'm sure you all realise that David Beckham isn't going to be paid an annual salary for a 3 and a half month period.
LA Galaxy 1 - 2 Real Salt Lake
The game had been billed as 'the battle for the bottom of the table'. Sadly, the LA Galaxy lost meaning that they remain in last place on the league table by 4 points, although they have 2 games in hand as compared to the team in 12th. On the plus side MLS does not have relegation. You can read the game report online here.David Beckham was on hand to support his team along with his sons, Brooklyn and birthday boy Romeo. The scoreboard displayed a birthday message for Romeo in lights, which was nice. Earlier in the day the family headed out to the Beverley Hills Cheesecake factory to celebrate Romeo's Birthday photos are in the gallery
For those fans who were asking, the Copa Minnesota game between LA Glaxy and the Minnesota Thunder is being rescheduled, details here.
P.S The Sunday tabloids contain the usual weekly gossip and unfounded rumors. Read with caution.

So that's that for the 2007 season really? No chance for the play-offs? When does 2008 season begin? Sorry for the 21 questions just trying to figure out how long a break the lad will have.

what cute pictures of David with Romeo and Brooklyn. What a pity they couldn't have watched the team win. It's good of Becks to go and cheer them on.

Thanks for the guardian interview...an interesting read. As a Dad I can relate to how happy his kids are being a big thing to him. People forget that...they think he should make decisions for footie reasons only but life isn't like that once you're a Dad.
Anyway hope his recovery goes well

redfred, I could also argue that people also forget to give him credit for his decision to put his family first - just an observation.
He is derided and belittled even more.....so whether the decisions are for footie reasons or more for family concerns, he seems to be more unappreciated than ever by certain groups and they deride him even more.
The fact is that his mission in the US, as stated, was to promote and to raise the profile of soccer in America. The fans or potential fans really need to see David healthy and on the pitch. Focus on his family life and lifestyle etc will not help his mission and makes him the target of more negativity.
I also wish him a speedy recovery.

david is as big as he is because he transcends the sport. so his life off the pitch is part of the deal. he knows and accepts it. focus will never be off his family life and lifestyle. but it's certainly nothing new. in a country obsessed with fame, i think his profile will help his mission. he's drawn people to soccer because of his name, not because they are hardcore fans of the sport. either way, negativity is part of the deal too.
really good read with the espn article. another article saying what so many of us are saying. the whole situation is just a shame.
the watt interview was also a good read. thanks for posting, anna.

The Good Sunday to all. Beautiful the images. For any reason it has gone in America we like fans must only augur he to realize all its desires is like family man that like player. The critical bad ones and the praises by now are part of its life, but to see its family happy, will help it in the harder moments. David the beautiful and protecting dad.Loredana,Samuele,Gabriele

Thanks for the lovely pics. Looks like Romeo had a nice birthday
The article from ESPN is quite good but I have to disagree with the part where he says it was David's decision to play the full game against Chivas. How does anyone in the media know that? Were they there? David said on David Beckhams Soccer USA that he only expected to come on as a sub for 30 minutes at most against Chivas and that when he arrived at the stadium from the airport Yallop approached him and asked if could start.

Syd it's not a math-o-matical impossibility but the Galaxy would need to win 90% of their remaining games and also hope that the team placed 8th doesn't do the same. Realistically with 95% certainty.. the season ends October 21. There are 3 or 4 exhibitions scheduled for Nov/Dec and the 2008 regular season will commence at the beginning of April.
Other exhibition matches might be in the pipeline dunno. But Beckham will almost certainly have a 5 month break from competitive soccer games with the Galaxy.

Thanks for the warning off the tabs! Helps my restraint.
Re family focus -- one of the things Becks got so much attention for, for better and worse: he's an old fashioned tough and tumble player on pitch, with somewhat less traditional lifestyle off. Not the fame and celeb part, but the liking to take care of his babies, cook, clean (that part's the O.C. ;-)! ), and be proud of his wife working and her success -- when she has that. Drove a lot of people mad, in the "just isn't done" way. Lot's of men from earlier days, when Becks' outlook was even more uncommon, still froth like lunatics in the comments boxes under any article about him in the UK papers -- and probably elsewhere -- whole thing must really have threatened them ;-) .
In terms of healing -- nothing worse for it than depression -- kids and getting out of the house are good medicine!

I hear hes going to go to England on a laon is that true?
9:19 PM
the rumors of him going on laon or loan even are just that rumors and haven't come from any reliable sources :)
10:29 PM
now there are rumors that the lad is going to be player-manager. I guess with LA Galaxy sitting in last place we are going to be hearing a lot of rumors
1:15 AM
I know Syd you wonder what they are going to come up with next!
8:30 AM
Thanks for the interview. So wow, I wonder who that Mexican family in Texas was. They had no idea of the future international superstar they were housing!
