David Beckham wallpaper

David Beckham wallpaper

The LA Galaxy have released a new wallpaper featuring David Beckham called "celebration". Thanks to Ben for the heads up! I've added the highest resolution to the wallpaper gallery as computers with lower resolution screens will automatically re-size it. To use it as your background, simply open the wallpaper and then right click on the image and select 'set as background'.

Hi Loredana, I forgot to answer you the other day about the Figo and/or Zidane to LA Galaxy rumors. I think these rumors are just rumors. MLS teams have a salary cap in addition the 'Beckham rule' means each team may have 1 designated player. In the case of a designated player 400k counts towards the salary cap the remainder of their salary is picked up by investors. Any player earning above 400k counts as a DP I believe. Landon Donovan is on 900k a year but as he was with the LA Galaxy prior to the 'Beckham rule' players in that situation were 'grand-fathered' so they are not treated as DP's for one year. This means that at the beginning of next season under the current rules LA Galaxy already has 2 DP's and only 1 DP slot. Now they may trade Donovan (impossible to know) but even if they did they would still have to trade with another team to obtain a second DP slot - a team that is not currently using it's DP slot at all (and there are several such as Chivas) could trade their slot in exchange for say 2 of LA Galaxy's current players. The trouble is LA Galaxy already has a very thin roster - squad. The roster - squad has no depth and if you keep making 2 for 1 trades you expose yourself to injury crunches. So I really doubt there is any truth to these rumors

More from Eric great stuff!

Looking forward to the LA Galaxy coming down-under but I hope there will be more news on the lad training with Arsenal. I know he will have friendlies in Vancouver, Minnesota, and then a couple down here but I think he'll need an opportunity to train a bit as he's coming back from injury and I think he wants to go into the LA Galaxy pre-season with a bit of fitness. I know people say he needs to be rested but considering the lad hasn't been fully match fit since June I think he'll be wanting to keep his hand in. Any news on the Arsenal front at all Anna?

Ooh. They lose a spot in the squad for both players they trade for a DP slot? So as long as they have an extra DP their squad has to be one man smaller?
MLS squads are all too small already with the new cups and tournaments they're taking on -- especially if they want to get more international caliber players.

p.s. I think Becks would want to meet you, Anna, I think you should give him the opportunity. If he has looked at the site he may be curious about who has done such a great job. It's so comprehensive, intelligent, and unique, and he would know you aren't a swoony fan. (Plus you have that ManU upbringing in common!).

No news on the Arsenal rumor as yet Syd - like you I hope it's true but we'll have to wait and see.

Diane, I probably haven't explained it very well lol I'm still learning about MLS clubs and the rules etc and I'm far from knowledgeable on this. It's not that they have to have one less player in terms of the rules. It's just they (as the rules stand) are only entitled to one DP so they have to trade something to get a second DP slot and so to keep Landon Donovan for example as things stand they would have to trade one or more players with a team that is not using its DP slot. Some people are predicting a change in the rules - but as of right now yes they'd have to give up some player(s) to keep Donovan. Also Donovan counts as 325k against the cap at present, next year if he stays he would count as 400k. The cap means, I guess, that the more 400k players you have the smaller your squad can be because you have 1 player on 400K rather than say 4 players on 100k each so if the Galaxy is to have more depth to the roster and to be more competitive within MLS - scouting for talented up and comers who can contribute but will play for smaller salaries is a vital component of feilding a competitive team. At least that seems to be how it works but if I have this wrong I hope someone more knowledgeable will correct me.

Thanks for your kind words Diane.

Thanks Anna. Good grief though. I understand MLS wanting to carefully structure spending after the old US league's problems, but this structure sounds insane. lol - after a bit of shopping, a team could end up with exactly eleven players...and just because they HAVE to field eleven ;-) .

I also think the starting salaries are way too small, but we need not get me started on that...let's just say that the player's union could do with a visit from dear Gary Neville!
