David Beckham: 'True Patriot'

Steve McClaren, England Manager, has praised David Beckham saying, He's a true patriot and he loves playing for England. That's still his motivation, that's still his mind-set." McClaren told reporters that Becks is working towards a return to the England squad for their matches in November, he said, "He's in late training at the moment and that's his target to be back playing and in contention for that squad." Full story online here.

Six years ago today...

David Beckham scored the goal that sent England to the 2002 World cup. In the 93rd minute of the match between England and Greece at Old Trafford he scored from a trademark freekick to level the scores, giving England the point required for automatic qualification. He gave a man of the match performance, pundits rated him 10/10 and called for him to be knighted! It was one of the highlights of his career as well as one of his proudest moments in an England shirt.

Here's scans of The Sun's coverage of Becks great performance please excuse the quality of the scans, my scanner is very low-tech. Here's one quote from John Sadler "David Beckham v Greece. This was the afternoon when one man literally took on the opposition on his own. I have only ever give one full 10 out of 10 rating before and that was for Michael Owen against Germany in Munich. That the next should follow so rapidly is remarkable - as remarkable as Beckham's performance"

It really should have been Sir Beckham after that. I don't know what the hold up is but I hope the lad will be knighted before long he deserves it

Thanks for this Anna. It's interesting to look back at something like this as it really shows how fickle the English press have been to him. Nice memories all the same :-)

Looks like Becks' knee got a little irritated by the practice on thursday:

Thanks Anna! I especially like this because everyone still always talks about the goal (as they should) but not always about how unbelievable Becks was throughout the match (as they certainly should).

I never forget: I was with my little sister at my bedroom watching the game in a sunny saturday morning. (The game was during the morning over here)
93 minutes - Becks scores the goal that qualifies England to the WC. I just remember of myself running all over the house and screaming like crazy. I think I will never celebrate a goal like I celebrated that day.
I would just properly watch his celebration after the game ended, when the TV showed the highlights. At the time of the goal I just ran all over the house.
And my little sister without understanding a thing. Hehe. :-D

That season (2001/2002), Becks was having a very good season. Too bad that metatarsal injured happened.
I´m pretty sure that if the injury hadn´t happened, Manchester would get to the Champions League Final and England would have gone far in the World Cup.

Anyway, unforgettable day.
Thanks for the scans and good memories, Anna. :-)

Thanks for this I was not following Beckham back then and it's good to learn more about him. This seems to be the only site that mixes up to date news with highlights from his career

Impossible is nothing = LA Galaxy 2007

they somehow managed a 2-1 away win over current MLS champion Houston Dynamo

if they win their 3 remaining games they can qualify by themselves !

a little bit of Becks spirit within the LA Galaxy ? (comeback and never give up)

have a fantastic day/night everyone

Thanks to "anonymous" for The Sun link all those quotes are from the half-time interview Becks gave last month which was posted on the site, so as The Sun are recycling (which they do quite a lot) I won't post it - but thank you for sharing the link all the same!
