LA Galaxy win Minnesota Cup
David Beckham started in today's LA Galaxy friendly against the Minnesota Thunder. He assisted the first goal after 7 minutes, scored by Edson Buddle. Early in the second half the Minnesota Thunder equalised. The game remained at 1-1 at the end of regulation time and so the winner of the Copa Minnesota match was decided on penalty kicks. The Galaxy won 3-2. Congratulations to the team. There is a good write-up of all the details from the game both on and off the pitch, online here.David Beckham told reporters, "It's been great. The reception I got in Vancouver was great, and tonight, there were a lot of people that turned out. I hope they were pleased."
He also took off his shirt and handed it to a little girl in the stands. He told the media, "She was waving at me since I came out so I decided to take it off and give it to her." Becks also signed autographs for kids on the sidelines before wrapping up his Minnesota debut.

Question: I'm a little embarrassed, but I don't know the structure that has the match decided by penalty kicks directly following regulation time. Is that common, and should I have known ahead of time?
Becks sounded like he was almost back to his old self in the 1st half, more active than in Vancouver, and setting up good chances. Sigh, would have been nice if at least one more were put to good use...but a win's a win!
Becks subbed at 74 min according to announcer.

I don't know Lulu but soon as England's first training session is this Wednesday at 10.30am so just under 48 hours from now. That training session will be open to the public btw :)
Diane - it is unusual for them not to play extra-time before going to a shoot-out but someone must have decided to do it that way :)

Anna I don't know, I'm fine with photoshoots but the idea of ads splashed everywhere with him just in his underwear comes with the danger of him being incredibly over-exposed. But it's Armani so hopefully it'll be classy.

I'll do a proper update as soon as there is some news! LOL it's all rumors and recycled rumors at that, today! Becks officially made a statement on Oct 1 that he would not be going on loan. This 'loan' story has been recycled 20 times and it never gets any more interesting for the re-telling :)
And Victoria Beckham's spokesperson has denied that shes pregnant.
So that's what isn't news today lol

The media are sooo stupid. They made up the story that he would go on loan and then they write that hes not and make a fuss. Un-freaking-believable. He was never going on loan and as you say he said so! There was a rumor about him maybe practicing ...which I hoped was true...but that was never definite and never meant more than him using someones facilities for a few weeks when he went to the UK for Christmas... there never was going to be a return to the premiership to actually play. The media are so irresponsible with this bs Grrrr!

All he said at the Vancouver press conference was that the Galaxy would have no problem if he TRAINED with a European club off-season, something which a number of MLS players apparently do at various times. Next day the tabs had half the teams in the EPL measuring him for his new kit. The press may not get their facts straight, but they certainly know what sells papers ;-) !
However, that was before Gullit was hired, who is big on fitness and may have his own plans for Becks' regimen. Gullit did say that he didn't think Becks NEEDED to go abroad to train, so who know what ideas he has. Interesting to see at any rate.
BTW, did anyone who went to the Minnesota match notice any limping or icing? Just another worried Auntie question. (Clearly I'm watching the fitness issue like a hawk...as if I could do anything about it!!!...)
