David Beckham Academy Anniversary

David Beckham Academy birthday cake

UPDATE - David Beckham taped an interview for the Parkinson show tonight. Becks told of his disappointment at England's football defeat against Croatia and received a huge cheer from the audience. Some of his comments from the interview are online here. The show will air Dec 15 on ITV1

Becks also taped an interview for The BBC's Inside Sport, you can watch an excerpt here or if that link doesn't work for you select the interview from this page, the full interview will air next Monday night on BBC1 at 11.20PM - here's an excellent article "David Beckham's passion is the blueprint by which to rebuild national game", that appears in The Times. which was written by the Inside sport presenter who interviewed Becks at his Academy.

David Beckham celebrated the two year anniversary of the David Beckham Academy in London this morning with a special birthday cake and 120 school children from Kent. Photos are in the gallery.

Becks Sportsman of the year nominee

On a bright note and I think we all need some good news, David Beckham has been nominated for the 2007 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year award which will be announced December 3. Details here. Congratulations Becks!

England Video Clip

Here is a clip (sorry about the quality) of Becks talking to Skysport and The BBC after the match -

The Sun reports that Steve McClaren was sacked by the FA shortly after the match and that the formal announcement will come later today. His dismissal should mean that Terry Venables will be out of a job too. David Beckham will be counting on the new England manager for his 100th cap. Fabio Capello has expressed an interest in the role. More on this here.

Match reports, commentaries and player ratings in the media are all giving David Beckham due credit for his creative and passionate contribution last night, here are a couple of good articles from The LA Times and The Daily Mail and a detailed analysis of his 'mileage' from the BBC -

Distance covered: 6400m in 45 minutes
David Beckham, showed like he did in the World Cup 2002 qualifier against Greece, that when the chips are down he is England's man.

He proved that in the second half against Croatia - although in this occasion there was no happy ending for the LA Galaxy player.

The 32-year-old covered more ground than the other players who played the second 45 minutes occupying a lot of the right-hand side and often occupying his favourite area 20 yards from the byline, hugging the touchline.
Also there is a 7 minute clip with all the goals available here.

I just hope Becks will get 100 caps. I felt so sorry for him when they asked him if he thought it might be his last match. Why don't they eff off with their stupid questions talk about kicking him when hes down. I am staying positive too I am going to keep hoping and praying for 100!!

My boyfriend and I both cried so it was a pretty bad night in our house,,, we ran out of tissues :-(

I'm gutted =( I was so happy when Crouch scored and Dvid had assisted with that awesome cross. I was at the pub and everyone was going nuts but then of course it all went pear-shaped. I was half-expecting a miraculous extra-time equaliser again but it wasn't meant to be. Only plus is now we get rid of McLaren

It's cold comfort but I'm glad to see Muttley and his sidekick muppet Venables sacked. 15 months too late of course and it would be nice to see a few of the FA boys in the jobless queue with them. It was a right royal balls up that led to us missing out on Scolari and getting the ginger munchkin in first place. Barwick needs to be shown door too.

Capello would be an improvement on McLaren because at least he admitted he'd got it wrong and came out and admitted how good David was and an important jugador
McLaren still never admit mal mistake to end David playing for England for many months times. Capello would also get better results from the talent.

After a good cry in bed last night and waking to that lovely birthday cake, the McClaren news (so long overdue), and the solidarity I'm feeling amongst my fellow England fans all over the place...I know we're gonna get through it. Thanks for the good stuff posted here, re-living David's awesome assist is great, and congrats to him on SI. All we can do is look to the future. I have no doubts he will get 100 caps and beyond, I just refuse to entertain them (personally). He's still the best at his service. Onward and upward we go ladies & gents--to NZ and Oz for the Galaxy and beyond. The game must go on. :)

Thanks big time for these lovely pics at the DBA Anniversary.

I'm sure the kids won't forget that day in their whole life :)

+ it's good for Becks to have something postive on his mind too.

Mourinho just said that he will not consider the job... but Capello has said that he would love to do it.

I'd love to see him do it as far as Becks is concerned. We all know how he felt about Beckham at the end of last season... he might even give him the chance to play in 2010.

Happy Anniversary to Becks! He was England's best player (as usual) so why would he be dropped from the next squad? I don't even get why people say he won't get to 100 caps why should he not be part of the next squad and game for England? It would be terrible to drop him. Fans want to win even friendlies people don't like losing so he is still needed!!
Thanks for clips Ana

Yes I agree George I think Capello could be good. Sure I hated him at time for things he did/said/decided at RM but that said he is a tough nut and I think he could handle the media. I think he can manage big egos as there were a few in the dressing room at RM and he also realized David's value in the end.

Thanks Maria for the link I will add that to the next update :)

I will be putting Parkinson online through youtube or dailymotion. I'll also add Inside Sport if I can. I'm going to Sydney tomorrow with my family though and I won't be back until after it airs so it might already be online before I'm back, if it's not I'll add it when I am :)

Have a great time in Australia Anna and enjoy the match!

I am on the fence a bit over Capello. Not really a fan but will admit he'd be a hell of a lot better than McLaren was. I'd have liked Mourinho but hes not interested.

thanks for the pic of the cake anna, it made me smile too...after that huge loss of England, Its nice to see something to smile about. and good on beckham doing interviews and celebrating his academy even after the disappointment of the match, I hope the new England manager would keep him and the other experienced players while training the up and coming ones, the England Under 21 seem to be doing well---there is hope yet :)
