Football Writers Tribute Award
David Beckham received the Football Writers Tribute award for his outstanding achievements in football this evening in London. Congrats Becks! Photos in the gallery.
Upon receiving the award, Becks reaffirmed that he would not be retiring from the national team although he was not making any assumptions about the future. He said, "I have played 99 times so far, we’ll see. What I always want to be remembered for is that I have given my best in every game whether that’s for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy or England. Playing for my country has been the biggest honour of my career.
Becks also said that Gary Neville, Dave Gardner and Terry Byrne remain his three best friends. "They are the three that I would trust with my wife naked," he said. "That's how good they are as friends."
Sven Goran Erikkson led those assembled in a toast to David Beckham's 100th cap, saying "he deserves it." More details from the night online here.
(Source) Former England captain Bryan Robson also gave a speech about his former team-mate, who polished his boots as a youngster at Old Trafford. He said, "He was proud to clean my boots and sometimes that goes away from the game now, YTS boys now want to be superstars before they start. That's why David has been the player and person he is - he was proud to clean my boots because I was a hero of his when we were younger."
Robson also spoke about Beckham's trademark free-kicks saying, "Practice makes perfect, that's what David did with his free-kicks."
Thanks to Ben for the above quotes!
You can watch part of Becks interview with Skysports above. You can also read more of his comments online here. Here are some of his comments on Capello -
"He has an aura that players will enjoy, they are going to enjoy playing under him. I enjoyed playing under him, even in the bad times."
"There were ups and downs - and I said at the time it was higher than him, the things that were going on there," Beckham recalls.
"Apart from Sir Alex Ferguson, I have never seen anyone so dedicated to watching football and learning about it," he added.
"He will do it his way - and that is a good thing."
"We had the fear factor the year we won La Liga. That is what all great managers have."
"The fear factor with a manager is important. We had it at Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguson, and he had so much success and is still having it."
"He has been passionate about every team he has managed," Beckham notes.
"His knowledge of football is one of the best - and he has the experience."

These days we talk so much of his friendship with famous star, but I like to know that Neville is his best friend (the other 2 friends are players too?). My kids are sure that Capello will give him chance to play again for his country (I hope 100 +++++++...) Anne thanks for all. Ciao everybody Loredana, Samuel, Gabriel.

Hi Loredana, sorry I should have explained better, Terry Byrne is Becks personal manager and Dave gardner is an old friend from his Manchester United days. Dave signed there as a youngster too but didn't make the first team and went on to other things and has a successful business of his own now.
