Becks to be United Ambassador?

David Beckham for Emporio ArmaniThe Sun and The Daily Mail are both reporting that David Beckham may be asked to act as a global ambassador for Manchester United when he retires from playing professional football. Becks could eventually take over from Sir Bobby Charlton. It is thought that Becks former team mate Ryan Giggs might also take on a similar role!

Also in The Sun, Terry Venables has backed Becks for his 100th cap and urged he be given the captains armband to mark the special moment.

Fabio Capello is expected to catch up with Becks at Arsenal's training ground tomorrow, when he is expected to tell him that he will be selected for his first squad. I'm sure there will be lots of cameras and even more speculation! Let's just hope it's a good meeting.

Also there are are two clearer scans thanks to Letitia of David Beckham's Emporio Armani ads in the gallery.

Happy New Year from Becks

David Beckham has updated his blog

Hello and a happy new year to you all,

I’ve had an incredible start to the year already! I was lucky enough to receive the Football Writers Tribute Award last night, which was amazing for me personally. I was pleased to have Sven Goran Eriksson and Bryan Robson there at the ceremony saying a few words about my career. Both of them have achieved much in the game and are good people. It was also very emotional watching the highlights of my career so far. I’m so proud of what I have accomplished and I know I still have plenty more to offer. It was a special night for both me and my family, who were also there with me, and I hope I can create some more memories to add to the ones recognised yesterday evening.

I’m currently spending my days at Arsenal’s training ground, making sure I keep myself fit during the MLS off-season. It’s nice to be back in the UK even though the weather is a bit chilly! I’m definitely missing the Californian sun, and it was very kind of Arsene Wenger and Arsenal to let me train alongside the squad and use their facilities. I’m working hard to keep fit and to give myself the best chance of being called up to Fabio Cappello’s first England squad next month.

Hope you all had a peaceful & restful festive season.
Here’s to a great new year.

It is so nice to read Becks new blog. He is so sweet as always. Award well deserved. Especially like he said that 'I still have plenty more to offer'. Yes, there will be plenty memories to come. I can't wait to see tomorrow's news on Capello's meeting with Becks. Hopefully there is a good news to pick up David for the England team. Fingers crossed.

Capello is fluent in Spanish and Becks speaks well enough for a proper talk -- just not enough to speak to the press (too much opportunity for misinterpretation, which the media does with such enthusiasm even when he speaks English!).

I'm not sure I believe the stories about Becks and Capello having a formal meeting anyway. Certainly not about Becks playing, for his knowledge of the England set-up... maybe.

p.s. Nice if Venables had included the phrase "I was proven wrong" anywhere at all in his remarks over the past year, before he started writing as if he's been Becks biggest fan since '96.

Sorry, short note of bitterness and will now move on ;-) . Obviously all fans are always welcome!

@lulu: I have the same question in which language will they talk? : - )
Ambassador for ManU this would be very great and a big honour for David.

Hope he will get more as only the 100th cap!

Keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow!!!
