The Countdown Begins!
Beckham's Unsung Generosity
An Mlive.com article about band Three Days Grace reveals a little tidbit involving Becks!
When he's not busy recording those albums or crafting an elaborate stage show, Sanderson devotes time to Herbie Rocks, a yearly celebrity online auction he created with his wife, Janin. Proceeds benefit Operation Herbie, a charity group that funds worldwide medical treatment for children. The latest auction is set for May 3, and Sanderson said the latest donations left him a bit star-struck.
"This year is exponentially bigger than last year," he said. "Michael Jordan sent us some stuff; David Beckham sent me a jersey. I have so much great memorabilia in my house right now. I basically just collect the stuff and try to talk to people while I'm on the road, and try to get them excited about what we're doing."

Let Countdown Commence!
We are very much on the brink of Capello's first 30, from which a final 23 players for the England vs. France friendly will be culled. If David makes the first 30 it is unlikely he would be cut. Today, Capello will announce his provisional squad. There's nothing firm coming out of the England camp, but of course there's loads of speculation.
FABIO CAPELLO is set to recall David Beckham to the England squad today.
Boss Capello wants to test him against strong opposition. And that could mean Becks winning his 100th cap against France next Wednesday.
The ex-captain passed a check by Capello’s assistant Franco Baldini in Dallas last weekend.
Capello has also taken on board rave reviews by LA Galaxy chief Ruud Gullit and SunSport told yesterday how Becks has convinced the Italian he is fit for action after five friendlies.
This & more here.
Lalas on the Looming Century
Lalas has spoken to the press about David's impending 100th cap. Bearing in mind Lalas himself is stuck on 96, he has some personal perspective on this time in David's life right now. So like him or hate him, you can at least say Lalas must understand Becks's desire.
"For him to finally get over the top and get it done with is going to be important," the former USA defender told Sky Sports News.
"But I also think he wants to make sure he earns it. Not necessarily for the service that he's given but for where he is.
"He wants to contribute. If you're going to come in and play against a team like France you need all guns blazing so he wants to be called in on his merits.
"He understands as he gets older his chances are less but I still think David Beckham can help England right now with where he is physically and for the type of player he is.
"And for the type of big-game player he is. When things are on the line, David Beckham steps up." (Source)
From One Legend to Another
David presented legendary footballer Pele with a lifetime achievement award at a ceremony in Manhattan today.
"For me to be here to present this to the greatest sportsmen of all time, I feel particularly honored," the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder told reporters. "This absolutely is a highlight moment for me."
In the same article David discusses life in America...
"I'm very happy, my family is very happy," said the 32-year-old. "It's been a great move for us."
...and his commitment to reform soccer here:
"Soccer is a magical game. I'm very confident fans here in America will continue to see that," said the former Manchester United midfielder.
"There's no reason they can't be as passionate about soccer as they are about every other sport here."

Harlem Youth Soccer
While I'm unsure whether or not David and Pele were able to make this event (nothing firm is on the wires at the time of this post), George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton hosted a fundraiser for Harlem Youth Soccer. The club is hoping to raise $300,000 for programs, and to begin building a playing field.
On Wednesday, former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton are scheduled to serve as honorary chairmen for a $1,250-a-seat fund-raiser for the club at Gotham Hall in Midtown. They are scheduled to be joined by perhaps the world’s two best-known soccer players, Pelé and David Beckham; one of the nation’s richest men, Philip Anschutz, an investor in Major League Soccer; and representatives from corporations including Visa, Nike, Adidas, Univision and Anheuser-Busch. Major League Soccer, an American professional league, is helping to organize the event. (Source)
Whether or not Becks was there, it sounds like a very worthy event!
A Little Light Viewing
For fun, here's the Instinct television commercial:

this is why Beckham is so classy: because, as great as Pele was, he has continually downgraded David's personality, his past achievements, and his desires to help broaden football in the future, yet David still shows up to honor him! most people would have hung up the phone! class.
i think the Galaxy are scheduled for a pair of practices on Thursday in Los Angeles, so David would probably need special permission to stay in New York if he was there. could have sworn i just saw pics of him in L.A...the guy gets around!

To the first anonymouse poster:
I've just read that David didn't stay the night in NY but went back to LA after the program and report for next morning's training. LA Galaxy provided a corporate jet.
And yes, you're right. Beckham is class! Something Pele doesn't have when it comes to giving opinions about other footballers. You can never hear a bad word coming from Beckham's mouth.
I cried when I learned that Becks was called-up for England's game against France.
