Asia Tour a Success
Despite rumblings regarding low attendance, the Galaxy have deemed the Asian tour a "success". When asked why tours such as Asia take place, Lalas had the following to say:

"One, the opportunity to get away from everything in-market and insulate the team a little bit; we have a bunch of young players, new players, and sometimes you need to have that isolation to -- if the word is 'bond,' whatever, sometimes you need that," Lalas said. "Number two, there's an economic aspect to it. We play these games and we are able to then pay for all the interesting and innovative things that we do. And three, we've tried to expand the brand internationally. This is a part of the world that may not know a tremendous amount about the Galaxy or MLS. It's good for us to go there and set up shop and let them see a little of what we're all about."

Football Giants Join Pepsiyouniverse
A new Pepsi social networking site will soon be launched, and Becks is one of the footballers who's lending his voice to the advertising.

They plan to launch a website, Pepsiyouniverse.com, that will allow users to discover which celebrities they resemble by comparing their own interests to those of their idols.

It is backed by six of the biggest stars of world football: David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho, Cesc Fábregas, Lionel Messi and Frank Lampard, who will star in a multi-million-dollar advertising campaign to be launched next month.

I wish I could, but I cannot find the link either. If/when I can I'll update the post, but as I said in the post, check the righthand side of the page frequently leading up to the match and, presumably, look under "today's match". Right now we know as much as you, I'm afraid.

just finished watching the game felt sorry for david as he put in some fantastic crosses and passes but none of his team mates managed to convert them . also lot of game went down the left hand side often when david was in open space . i hope baldini could see davids hard work if he was watching. game got very heated at end and david was booked his frustation was clearly showing and i dont blame him . it was obvious this game was more important to him than some of his team mates. david appeared to be having an argument with gullit as well at the end .gullit seemed to be blaming him for something. anyway hope it was enough to get in england squad really unfair if they only take this game into consideration.david gave his shirt to a little girl at the end which was really sweet. deb x x

I closed the window before the Gullit/jersey stuff happened, it seems, as I saw neither. Hope all is well in the Galaxy camp tonight. I agree it was frustrating for all.

in regards to the third post, i also saw the beckham/gullit argument. i don't think it will be a big deal, as it appears to be game-related and they are both professionals...but it was interesting to see.

frustrating to watch, as we still haven't seen the full team play together yet! donovan finally plays, and now ruiz is out. becks showcased an array of free kicks and corners that his teammates just couldn't convert...speed, touch, power was all there...no excuses for capello now!

i just got back from the game and it was really intense. you could see becks was putting his heart and soul into and the poor calls by the referees was even frustrating to me so i can understand him being upset. my tickets were actually on the field, so i was close enough to actually see his emotions and wow!

Hi,

is there a possibility to watch the game on demand? Or somewhere a shortcut?

Wonder why Gullit was blaming David?

Keep my fingers crossed for his 100 cap!

Dear last anonymous,
How great that you got to see the match and on the field! If you come back to these comments and don't mind answering a few questions, I was more curious about some things than others.

The calls on plays that I really had no hope of seeing (on the 4" viewing option) were the offside calls that Becks got so mad at the linesman about. Did it look possible that he was offside both times?

Obviously we all wondered about the "altercation" in the second half (my announcer was useless and my screen froze for part). Could you tell much from your birds eye view?

Post-match, I wondered if Gullit was discussing what lead to his captain getting a yellow card in a pre-season charity match. Also, we might have been wrong in assuming it was an argument, Gullit might have just have been getting more details about things they were both disturbed about during the match?

I ask about those things in particular because it's clear that no one is going to want to lose to Beckham's team and there might even be a bit more hostility toward the Galaxy in general from opponents this year. At the same time Becks feels that he has even more to prove. So I worry about his frustration level, temper, and all of that sometimes leading to him attempting to play every position or putting himself at risk. I do think Gullit is a good coach to work with him on that.

I don't want the Galaxy to get one sided calls, some of last year's were pretty debatable, but I hope they get fair protection from the refs.

Last thing, I'm impressed with the order and discipline Gullit is trying to implement and we saw that develop more in each match in Asia. It was hard to tell on the mini screen whether the Galaxy seemed organized on the pitch last night. Otherwise, the finishing can only come with practice, and the effort seemed to be there.

Thanks,
Diane

diane,
the call where he got the yellow card it was another galaxy player called off and to be honest from where i was it did look offside but i was more down the field so its very possible that it LA was on.

as far as the altercation beckham walked away from the ref after the card was issued and three fc dallas players followed him to midfield and started yelling out stuff to him. before i knew it all the players from both sides were at the center of the field and its a wonder a brawl was not started.

i saw the thing thing with gullit too, and i couldnt hear what they were saying but i think he was just asking what happened. and beckham was obviously very upset and you could see him pointing back to the spot of the play so i dont think it was a fight at all.

they were pretty well organized and made some nice plays, but with a player like beckham they really do need to work on their set pieces. they could win all of their games on that alone if they work at it.

anymore questions let me know

Thanks anon! I appreciate those observations. Becks is going to have to rein in his temper. It's not good for him, and its not a great example for the young kids he's mentoring on his team. Hoping for the best as always.

Hi Diane,

Yes you are right. His temper is a problem. Could get a lot of trouble because of this. And now he is captain so he has to be a role model for his team.

Btw. bad boys are sexy. Sorry for the female comment.

Don't worry Suki, it certainly makes a game more exciting now and then, and Becks has always had that in him! I'm also sure that he's still a great mentor and booster for younger players, as he has been for so many years for England and at Real Madrid.

I just wish that whatever is causing that high a frustration level on the pitch can be alleviated. I guess we think he must have seen it all by now, but from he's still human. I like it that Gullit is there because he knows Becks' standard and what he has on his shoulders, and I hope he is able to take some of the burden off.

:-( Sorry to be taking up so much space in the comments box, but I hadn't looked at the match photos before my other notes -- my goodness does Becks look unhappy in every pic! My screen was so small I couldn't see that it was so constant. That really upsets me. Even when things aren't going well he's always had at least a few smiles and a pat on the back for a teammate or a laugh after a dust-up. This REALLY won't do! :-(

no he did smile a lot which made everyone happy. he was waving to fans and smiling for them before the match. and did the same when he came back out after the half and then again after the game...well he didn't smile after the game but he did his usual wave/applause thing he always does

I have the same impression. He don't look happy on the pitch since he is in US. Maybe it is just me because I want him back in good old Europe.
My heart beats for him and Real Madrid so his leaving hurts me very much. But I'm happy that he now has a coach who knows what it mean to be a successful European football player.

And I don't believe him when he said that he felt no pressure when Franco Baldini is watching. I think there was a lot of pressure to succeed ...but he had proven very often that he could deal with that.
