MLS Season Opener

Galaxy in Colorado
The Galaxy are playing Colorado Rapids tonight in CO, and David's braved post-flight wear & tear and the elevation to start and captain his team. The game is broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, and therefore can also be found on TVU at TVU Networks, channel "soccer" (21500). You will need to install the TVU software but can view either from the software or directly on the TVU site. Apologies for the delay in getting this information to you. The match is in progress, 34th minute.

Update: Unfortunately the Galaxy lost 4-0 in what turned into an explosive game in its dying minutes, with red cards shown to both sides. Ruiz was taken off by stretcher with what appears to be a knee injury, extent as yet unknown. This prompted a small brawl led by Donovan against the offending Rapids players, demonstrating that if nothing else the Galaxy haven't lost their bond with one another.

Interview Miscellanea
Two segments aired on FSC during the MLS double-header tonight: David's interview with Max Bretos, and a bit called "6 in 60" which asked random questions of key players.

Although I can't recount the entirety of both (we'll keep an eye out on YouTube) those who've been concerned with the rumours Becks wants out of LA may take heart to hear he told Bretos he and his family are planning on staying in LA through his contract and beyond.

And he revealed his iPod contains the latest Snoop Dogg album and the occasional Christmas tune!

Becks's Latest Blog
David blogged again yesterday:

Hi everyone,

I’ve just arrived back in Los Angeles after playing for England against France and winning my 100th cap. It was a dream moment for me and I was proud and honoured to play for my country for the one-hundredth time and it was a truly amazing experience to play the game against France, one of the best teams in the world.
Back in LA, I’m really looking forward to the new MLS season and I can’t wait to get started. It’s my first full season with the Galaxy and we’ve had a good pre-season. Ruud Gullit and the coaching team have worked us hard to ensure we’re in top condition and prepared for the first game away to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. I really enjoyed visiting Denver last year for the All Star Game but I’m really looking forward to playing this time.
I’ll let you know next week how the match went.

Take care,

David

David's Boots Make Their Way to Yorkshire
Yet more happy connection between Becks and charity: A pair of David's boots are to be auctioned to benefit a school in a tiny Yorkshire village, making "quirky news" headlines here and there.

IT may be a tiny, sleepy Yorkshire village, but Grewelthorpe is poised for a brush with international sports superstardom at its charity auction.

Home to just one pub, a duck pond and a population of about 400, this North Yorkshire hamlet has managed to bag football boots from the feet of David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

There's also a baseball cap signed by motoring ace Michael Schumacher and a football autographed by Spurs players.

All this and more for the village school's charity auction held next month.

Not bad for a school with 34 pupils!

Beckham, Donovan, Ruiz, and a pile of garbage. It's going to be a long MLS season. The Colorado altitude may play some part in the conditioning, but these three guys are playing with a bunch of kids barely out of college. Ugh.

Gullitt should have taken Becks out once the game was out of hand, they're playing again on Thursday.

I am sad for David, but I do not understand: When David has agreed to play for the Galaxy, HE did not know that it was not a real football team? And everything is strange.NaturalLY so he put his face, unfortunately.Time ZONE?. Gullit had said that would have granted a little rest to him, a great rest, in fact he played 90 minuti.THANKS Galaxy, BECAUSE, YOU HAVE STOLEN A FOOTBALLER EUROPEAN REAL, BUT I HAVE A DISAPPOINTMENT, EVEN FROM BECKS, HE MUST NOT ALLOW THIS, HE MUST CLAIM FOR A REAL TEAM.FINGERS CROSS FOR THE FUTURE.SORRY ... loredana, samuele, gabriel

Last year Lalas controlled the line-up (including subs) and this year, according to rumour, he's trying to as well. Gullit is not pleased with that, so look for some fireworks to come.

You have to remember that the NCAA system in MLS means all teams have college kids who haven't ever played on pro level. Americans value college more than they value being a non-educated pro, which isn't the case in countries where soccer is regarded as a great sport.

He's signed into a contract ladies and gents, so don't let yourselves get upset about it--it's reality. He's with the Galaxy.

And even Man Utd had a bad opening to their season this year, and look at them now. :)

I am very sad for David. Things and press can change by day. Last week, most of press were sing nice songs for Becks' 100th cap; the next morning, most of them starting negative comments for David's performance and international future. Galaxy big lose last night only made things worse. I do hope David be strong and carry on. Hope Capello don't listen to those English media and keep Becks in the team. Wish all the best for David. We love you, no matter what.

The good news (if contentious) is Capello's remark likening Becks to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is easily the best player in Europe right now. Surely he'd want to keep around England's equivalent! :)
