Overall Asian Tour Turnout: Not As Good As Previous
With the Asian tour completed there isn't much to report other than some retrospection, speculations and a bit of gossip items. This is not something that the fans want to read about but the turnout for the Galaxy matches in Asia turned out to not be as good as the Beckham's first tour in that area.
AFP wrote an article trying to quote various spectators for different reasons for the seemingly declining "beckham-mania" in Asia but I think the reason that one Chinese fan pointed out in the comments section in the March 6th posting here is a reason that I can see being very valid as it wouldn't be the first time lack of advertising hurts attendance to popular events, sporting or otherwise.
The DBFO fans said: (little typos corrected :) )
"I am a Chinese. I know that the attendance low in Shanghai was nothing to indicate that David appeal is fading, it was simply because the event was not well organized and advertised. Many people even did not know this game was there."
Motorbiking Back To The UK?
Ok, not quite, I made that up with our 2 gossip items :) As we wait for more soccer action in L.A., here are some recently sprouting gossip items to keep you entertained.
Beckhams Moving Back To U.K.
Thanks to fan Fercho_25 for pointing this item to us. People.co.uk posted an article today saying that the couple is planing to move back to the U.K.
"Victoria Beckham has made a sensational U-turn - by vowing she and David WILL return to live in Britain."
You can read the full thing here.
Gordan Ramsay to buy David Beckham a motorbike
ShowbizSpy and a few other gossip sites wrote today that is to buy David a motorbike for his 33rd birthday in May so he and Tom Cruise can go biking together on a road trip. Read the full article here.
Reminder for those that asked, the above 2 items are UNCONFIRMED RUMORS.

LA Galaxy has never been to Asia with David before, he didn't go last year. We have to remember that people are buying tickets to see a team, and LA Galaxy is not Real Madrid, where the Asian fans would also be going to see Zidane, Figo, Raul etc, not just David.

The most important point in all of this, from a quote in the AFP article, is that one player cannot carry a team.
I'm not saying this as a prejudiced fan, just an observer of marketing, but the response to this tour is not a reflection of Becks' popularity it's a reflection of how the Galaxy are received.
When Becks travels to Asia alone he gets the same reception he always has -- even Mrs Becks' popularity there is undimmed. This was clear during both of their visits in the Fall.
I would be happier if Becks were still on a team where his football could be as well appreciated as his personal image. I guess we all would.

well said diane i agree with you on that last point . it has also been pointed out as you mentioned that the marketing of these matches in asia have been at times quite short notice. i find it difficult to see howpeople can point to these low attendances in asian matches as a reflection of becks falling popularity in general when just 3 months ago he played in front of huge sell out crowds in australia and new zealand .anyway popularity with the masses should never be used to define someone whos contribution to the world of football and beyond through his skill and humble personality amounts to so much more. deb x x

Wait, they are really giving up with America? Beck and Posh???
Is that a rumor that they are moving back or ist that the thurth?

No, they are unconfirmed rumors :)

David is light for Galaxy, the same thing can not be said of Galaxy.David did, his choice in January 2006 and I hope that he is happy, but I am convinced that if he had not been excluded from team England (I give many, kicked, MacClaren), and if he had not had those problems with Real Madrid, he still would be playing in a big club.I I understood correctly Victoria wants to return to live in England? The People is serious or is false as all the British tabloids? Motorcycle as Cruise?. Cruise if, break a leg matter little, but the legs are important for David, very important .Ciao everybody Loredana,Samuele,Gabriel

It's an unconfirmed rumour--and I believe it would be a long-term plan anyway--re: moving back to Britain. It's likely driven by the fact that Los Angeles isn't really the right town for Victoria to launch her fashion career. She is better off in Europe. As such, I am sure they're both looking to what their future will be when he is finished with his contract at Galaxy. He's said before it's likely it will be his last club appearance. As we are still several years away from the expiration of his 5 year term, we have plenty of time left to wonder. ;) And if any of his sons truly have an interest in becoming footballers, especially Brooklyn, a move back to England to train and play properly on that level (even youth play) would be handy. Who knows? :)

I hope David doesn't feel too disappointed with their Asia tour. Wish he has a nice rest, well deserved. I hope there is some good news to cherr him up. Wish he know that us fans will be always there to support him. Beckham forever.

Diane, I am glad to see you write again. I really like your writing. please drop in often.

i am from China, and i went to see the match in Shanghai.David is still popular in China, don't be confused by the news.
AC Milan and Barca had visited Shanghai in 2004,they also had matches with local teams,do you know the number of the audience in two matches? The audience in each match was not enough 10,000,The chairman of Barca was hurt.
The audience of the Galaxy vs Shanghai match was about 30,000.
who know LAG in Shanghai?people also do not have passion with local team, almost everyone was to see David.
the media say David was not popular? :)
The football market in Shanghai is very depressed, the audience is often a few thousands(not enough 10,000) in local football match,so 30,000 is a very good number.

People changed Victoria's words, she actualy said that one day they will be back to England. Not now, she said they are happy in America as well. I do understand it, her parents and relatives live there, she is british and living in England will does just good for her carear, plus whatever education boys would like to get,it will be the best in Europe.
The rumore about bikes is stupid, because I remember David once said that he can't ski and bike because it's dangerous. Maybe it's even written in his contract.

The turnout doesn't look that poor in this picture from the Hong Kong match
