Beckham cameo draws comparisons with Obama

Fabio Capello described David Beckham’s man-of-the-match award as like American president Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize after the midfielder made a 30-minute cameo in a 3-0 defeat of Belarus on Wednesday.

“I was surprised,” a smiling Capello told reporters at Wembley, when quizzed about the 34-year-old’s award on the night that he took his tally of England caps to 115.

“For 30 minutes? It’s like Obama winning the Nobel Prize after just nine months as the President of the United States.”

Former captain Beckham, who did not even make the bench in the 1-0 defeat in Ukraine on Saturday, also said he was a “bit embarrassed” to be named man of the match after spending most of the game warming up to high-pitched shrieks from young fans. [...]

“Whether David Beckham plays for five, 10, 15 minutes or half the match he always plays with lots of focus,” Capello said. “Some players find it hard to come on but Beckham does that very well.”

Beckham, sporting a bushy beard, said he was taking nothing for granted but insisted he would fight for his place in what would be a fourth World Cup finals with England.

“Fabio Capello knows the situation with me,” he told reporters. “There is still a long way to go before the finals. What I will do is work hard and play as hard as I can and make sure that I give myself a chance.” KEep reading

Galliani: David Beckham’s Milan return “very probable”

It is “very probable” that David Beckham will be returning to AC Milan at the start of the January transfer window, according to Rossoneri vice-president Adriano Galliani.

Beckham joined the Italian side on a three-month loan last January and saw the deal extended until the end of the 2008-09 season after impressing the Milan hierarchy with his quality and professionalism.

He has since returned to LA Galaxy but has been warned by Fabio Capello that not playing European football in the build-up to the World Cup finals would seriously damage his case for inclusion in the Italian’s final squad of 23 players. Keep reading

Beckham closes in on AC Milan loan

Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham says a deal for another loan to AC Milan is 95 percent done.

Beckham was loaned to AC Milan from last January through the end of the Serie A season, then returned to the Major League Soccer team. He wants to play in Europe again to ensure he’ll stay sharp and earn a place on England’s World Cup roster for the fourth time.

The 34-year-old entered England’s World Cup qualifier against Belarus in the 58th minute Wednesday night and sent a short corner kick to Shaun Wright Phillips, who scored the second goal in England’s 3-0 victory. Source

News in brief: Brand Beckham and Armani part ways

Celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham have been replaced by Emporio Armani as the label’s underwear brand ambassadors.

Giorgio Armani announced overnight in a statement that actress Megan Fox would become the new official worldwide face for Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans for 2010.

The statement said the soon-to-be revealed campaigns were shot by renowned fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in Los Angeles at the weekend.

The curvaceous star of Transformers and Jennifer’s Body replaces Victoria (Posh Spice) Beckham, who has been the face and body of Armani Underwear for the past two years.

The mother of three famously appeared in a steamy his-and-hers Armani underwear promotion with husband David earlier this year.

Armani earlier announced that Real Madrid’s Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo would substitute David Beckham as the face of Emporio Armani Underwear.

The changes were expected as the Beckhams had indicated they were intending to pursue their own fashion line. Keep reading
