Beckham’s In Houston

In the three years David Beckham has been with the Los Angeles Galaxy, he has missed out on the team’s annual visit to Houston twice. The first time for a bum knee and the second time for earning too many yellow cards on the field. But this year, he is both healthy and eligible to play.

“Happy to be here of course. Big game for us tomorrow, big game for both teams obviously,” said Beckham.

The Galaxy and Dynamo are already in the playoffs, but they are also neck in neck for the top spot in the western division.

Beckham is preparing for Sunday’s game by first trying to defeat a bit of jet lag.

“I have traveled back from Europe a couple of days ago,” he said. So trying to get sleep in and trying to relax and massages.” Keep reading

Hi everyone,

Well, the World Cup qualifiers are over and we’ve finished top of the group, which is fantastic. Throughout the qualifiers I think the players have all performed brilliantly and to qualify with two games to go was great for the country as we could start thinking ahead to next year’s World Cup in South Africa. We were unfortunate against the Ukraine, having Robert Green sent off so early in the game made it difficult for the team, but last night against Belarus we gave the fans something to cheer about again.
I was really happy to get on and play a part in the game, but I was really surprised and proud to be named man of the match. Whenever I get my chance I just try to play my best and last night was no different. Playing for England is an absolute honour for me as everyone knows. Everyone played well though, particularly in the second half and we could have scored more, but the win was all that counted. It meant that we finish top of the group and can now look ahead to next summer.
I’m on my way back to LA now and the important matches keep coming as the Galaxy have a tough match against Houston Dynamo coming up. We’re top of the Western Conference at present and we’ve qualified for the playoffs but we want to finish strongly in our final two games and we’re confident that we can get the right results starting against Houston.
That’s all for now.

England not taking World Cup bid lightly, insists David Beckham

David Beckham says England are “serious” about their ambitions to host the 2018 World Cup finals but has urged the bid committee to take on board the criticisms of their campaign to date by the Fifa vice-president Jack Warner if they are to avoid repeating previous mistakes.

Warner, who holds three votes as Concacaf president and could influence another two of the 24 Fifa executive committee votes, said the leadership of the England bid was “lightweight” and falling behind rival plans from Spain and Portugal, jointly, and Russia earlier this month. Beckham, who is to play an ambassadorial role with the 2018 bid team, threw his support behind England’s plans but warned no one was taking anything for granted when it came to competing to host the finals.

“If I can fight for the country and help us have a chance of getting this, then I’ll do that,” Beckham said. “I was honoured to be involved in the Olympic bid and we were successful there. I was asked to be an ambassador of this one. I accepted it and I’m serious about it. Obviously I’m still playing and it’s difficult for me to go to different places but, given the Major League Soccer season ends in November, I’ll be in South Africa in December [for the draw]. I’m going there for a few days and will do what I can.

“We have the people in place and we are serious about this bid. It’s not something we’re taking lightly. Just because we are England, love the game and we’re one of the biggest nations involved in the game, it doesn’t mean we are taking this bid lightly. We don’t ‘expect’ to get it because we can’t expect anything, but we’ll work hard. We want to get it.” Keep reading

Bruce defends choosing Beckham

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has defended his decision to name former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham as England’s man of the match against Belarus.

Bruce, working on the game as a television pundit, handed Beckham the award after he came off the bench to play his part in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory at Wembley.

One newspaper columnist later described the decision as “grotesque”, while England boss Fabio Capello likened it to Barack Obama receiving the Nobel Peace prize just months into his term as American president.

However, Bruce was unrepentant when questioned on the topic today.

“It’s incredible,” he said. “I have never known such a carry-on. When I was in the stadium, he came on to the pitch and let’s be fair, for 50 minutes, it was dull, boring, uninteresting. That’s the way I looked at it.

“David Beckham comes on to the scene, the whole stadium in unison rises to him and I thought, ‘Blooming heck! Wow! Fantastic! Now Dave, what have you got?’

“For me, for the 35, 40 minutes, he lit up Wembley, the way his attitude was, and I suppose that’s why Mr Capello keeps picking him to go into the squad, to do something like that for him. Maybe he can’t do it for 90 minutes. However, for me, he had an impact. That’s the way I saw it, that’s the way I called it.” Source
